"Working with diverse individuals" essay

I am writing this essay...and I have worked with people who were on a work-release program from prison (at a restaurant). Realistically these people are diverse compared to the PhDs I also work with. But for some reason, I can't find the right way to say it. I worked with prisoners? It just sounds..not right. I don't know how to spin it. Help?

Maybe you could talk about how during your time working at a restaurant you had the opportunity to work alongside individuals participating in a work-release program from Prison X. Refer to them as inmates if you must. Focus on what you learned from them, how it enhanced your understanding of the human condition, blah blah blah.

My grandfather was a prison warden and my dad grew up with a house full of inmates on work-release programs mowing the lawn, doing dishes, cleaning the house, etc. From what I understand they were all very positive people who were happy to be outside the prison and extremely willing to work.
