What's considered a strong/good BCPM gpa? I know supposedly bcpm is more important than overall (since...my overall gpa is probably never going to get higher than a 3.6..even with straight A's throughout my post-bac). I finally finished 2 semesters of gen chem (finished gen chem series I suppose), with an A and an A-. I was hoping to get an A- but I sucked at the final, which dropped my grade from an A to A-. I don't know if I should be worried yet since my cumulative is now at a 3.5 and bcpm at 3.76.

Unfortunately, the majority of my crappiness came from undergrad (never thought I'd ever have to worry about grades), so even though my post bac gpa is almost a 4.0, I'm pretty sure it won't matter much at all.

I know for my app, I'm going to have to use my BCPM gpa to counter my cumulative gpa..but it looks like even now it's not going to help much. 🙁

Or maybe I'm just being stupid

You're fine. Stop worrying. If you must worry, worry about something else.

A cGPA of 3.5 and sGPA of 3.76 hardly count as disastrous.

Your sGPA is good. Maintain it.

As for your cGPA, you could probably get an acceptance as is with a good MCAT score, but try to push it to 3.6 if at all possible. 3.6+ in both areas and a 30+ MCAT score should leave you in good shape. Good luck.

I've actually seen on here and a couple of school websites that said cGPA > sGPA.

the avg for MD matriculants is 3.6
For DO, in the 3.2-3.4 range. Keep in mind that AACOMAS' grade replacement policy does wonders for the GPA.

I'm actually trying to shoot for a CA MD school....and I'm a nontrad. I still have a lot of courses to take in the next 2 semesters of my post-bac (will be starting and finishing physics series, bio series, and ochem series). Also, will have about 200 hrs of clinical volunteering and beginning research this september. Looking to apply for the 2014-2015 cycle.

OP -- your sGPA is good at 3.76 but it seems that you have only taken Gen Chem I & II , and you still have yet to take what many consider the hardest pre-req classes: Physics and Orgo. If you get A's in all those classes-- you will be in great shape.

I also did a post-bacc (career-changing) and got A's in all of my pre-reqs and some higher level science classes. My cGPA from undergrad wasn't that great (3.57) but I got my cGPA up to a 3.7 and got a BCPM GPA of 3.84 --- so its definitely doable and you will be able to bring up both GPA's if you work hard. B/c my cGPA and BCPM GPA are not too far apart, my cGPA being lower than my BCPM GPA wont matter that much. I hear it matters more when they vary by a significant amount, like +/- .3-.5

BCPM GPA is not necessarily more important than cGPA or vice versa-- but if most of your bad grades were from undergrad when you weren't academically serious, then that would account for a lowish cGPA and your BCPM GPA would probably carry some more weight in that case since it shows what you are capable of when you start trying hard.
