Friday January 17th was such a bad day, yeah the news I got was worse than a rejection.... this is a really messed up situation and I want Canadian applicants to pay special attention:

When I first applied to 30 US schools, all went well, completed my secondaries sent in all the cash, spent over 2,000$ in total NOW.... my reference letters, I asked my registrar and she said instead of a pre-med committee what she does is summarize all my letters of reference and thats what they do. So now sweat, I gave her all my letters of reference from my profs. and she summarized and sent 'em in. Anyhow, I found out ON FRIDAY that NONE of my applications were compete because they only counted her reference letter as one, SO NOW I need to get my profs to send in their reference letters! not only is it late but for most schools the deadlines have JUST passed.... so not only are my applications late BUT my apps won't even be looked at!

Some schools were nice and said just fax us the letters, after I told them my situation..... exept U of Finch told me to forget it. Honestly, I know it's my fault for not looking into this deeper and just listening to my registrar at U of Toronto, and maybe its her fault too.... but ultimately I'm so dissapointed at myself, I don't care that I spent 2 grand, because truthfully money is not an object for me, BUT the wasted time is what kills me! anyhow, I don't know.... I think I'm just going to do this all over again in late may or early June and probably redo my MCAT in April, I am so totally shattered over this thing though... because this is the THE GAYEST reason not to make it into meds and my references are amazing, believe me! I feel like the worlds biggest looser, sometimes I think that GOD wants me to do something else with my life, I don' t know, right now I have a great job (just graduated from U of T) making $$ but I really don't care.... this weekend is so bad....

SO CANADIANS get THREE letters of reference at least! don't let your registrar sum it up for you EVEN if they say that's what they have done for past US applicants.....

Anyhow, still waiting to hear from 6 schools here in Canada, maybe not all is lost.

That's sooooo awful!!!!! I hope that things still work out for you!!! I have no idea why big schools like U of Toronto can't just get us a proper premed advisor so that these kinds of problems don't happen 🙁

I guess they just don't expect us to apply to the US, I don't blame them though, I blame myself more, I should have looked into the matter deeper

I'm surprised this is a problem. I would have thought most medical schools would have been familiar with "composite letters" from premed committees or advisors etc. I would be tempted to call the schools again and make them take a little more of the blame for the mix-up and consider your application.

Ocean11, that is very unfortunate what happened. I agree with canadagirl that UofT really needs to get a pre-med advisory committee....sure would have helped us out alot. I had to figure all this application stuff out myself.

Which UofT college are you in because I've never heard of registrars who summarize LOR's to give to medschools? Most U.S. schools say that if you don't have a premed committee, you need to send individual letters.

that's terrible ocean11--hope everything works out.
I'm also at U of T, but haven't really used the registrar for anything--they always seem to have someone new in...and i'm not sure if they are quite up-to-date on some stuff.

yeah, hopefully, some of the US apps work out for you.. it would be a shame for all that time and effort for the apps to just go down the drain without the adcom even looking at your app!

it just is an exasperated/frustrated way of saying of "the stupid thing is..."

I didn't mean anything offensive by saying "The GAYEST reason" it had NOTHING to do with homosexuality, sorry if some of you feel offended by that.

This thread was not supposed to start any flaming responses IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE GEARED TOWARDS APPLICANTS especially those from Canada, or other countries, to be careful when listening to their registrar or anyone else in this application cycle.

Hey,
I went through something like that. After my applications were complete in August, I called up the schools around october to confirm that my app was complete. Well Finch tells me that my LORs are not in yet. I call up my school and they say that the whole committee letter with the LORs were sent in August!!
I call Finch back and after being put on hold for 5 minutes, they tell me that they found my LORs. They were filed under my middle name and not my first name!!!!! Ofcourse my application was delayed 3 months!

I submitted my U Pitt application in July, and it was complete in August.

They rejected me TWICE. Once in September, and again in November. I didn't even know that that was humanly possible. 😕 😡
