Hey All:

I'm gearing up to submit the AMCAS today, but I'm kind of stuck on whether or not I should give Hawaii a try. I'm not a resident (I don't fit any of their residency screening criteria) but I have a 3.7 and a 38, so I figured maybe I could get in the hard way. Worth a try? Anyone done it before?

Cheers

I think in their secondary they ask what relaitionship you have with the state of Hawaii (i.e. Hawaiin, or have family there, or experiences with the state). I could be wrong tho.

I applied to HI last cycle, got an interview and went for it but didn't get in (I wouldn't have gone anyway...it's far! and I got into a school that fitted me more). You should look at their acceptance rate and see if it's worth it. They usually interview 100 out of state applicants and there are spots for 6 (that's not a very good %). Also, they do look at your relationship to HI (are you from there, got any relatives, etc.). I got the impression that they want to make sure that you'll probably stick around and practice there. My student interviewer mentioned that it's hard for new people to come and settle because it is hard when you don't have any support or family nearby.

You'll probably get an interview with your gpa and mcat (they assign points to your application and if you get above a certain # they'll interview you (btw the cutoff for out of state applicants seems like double that for in state). Be sure to look into the curriculum and make sure that the school fits you (they do a lot of PBL there).

I applied there because I knew some people got into there from my school. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't apply there b/c of the low stats and b/c I realized I didn't want to be stuck in paradise but also 5 hrs away from everything.

You will definitely get an interview. You really really have to want to go to Hawaii because of the mission, otherwise they will not take you.

Just out of curiosity, why are you so set on Hawaii? With a 37 and a 3.8, you can go a lot of different places!

Hahaha...I don't have any awesome reasons for wanting to go there...basically, it's paradise. And I love Japanese stuff. Neither of which are probably legitimate reasons for applying...haha. Thanks for the replies, guys, I ended up not applying there after all.

Cheers
