I'm applying in June and I can't decide whether I should apply to certain schools. I don't care about rankings but I really want to (or might have to) stay in NYC area. I'm considering applying to all the NYC schools but I realize that many of them are way beyond my numbers. Overall GPA is 3.53, science GPA is 3.64. Taking the MCAT in August but assuming I get 30+, is it worth applying to NYU, Cornell, Columbia, Sinai? I know that MCAT is a major factor here but I have to decide where to apply without knowing my score. In general, what are my chances of staying in NYC?
I appreciate any advice. 😀

I was in your same situation last year (AMCAS in June, MCAT in August). If you can afford it, I suggest that you apply to all of those schools (assuming you would actually attend if you were accepted). Since your GPA is pretty good, if you you score 30+ on the MCAT you may have a shot at one of those schools (depends on other factors too, of course, e.g. extracurriculars, recommendations). The truth is, you never know who will be interested in your application. Applying to medical school for many people is a once-in-a-lifetime event, so I don't think you should prematurely close any doors. I think your chances at those schools will be even better if you score in the 33+ range.

It really depends on your ECs. In particular when applying to the top schools like Cornell and Columbia research experience is almost a necessity. I know that for Cornell the secondary asked to talk about your research and if you haven't done any you will be forced to leave that question blank and that will not look too good on your application.
