Hi all,

Going through the app process, and was wondering what people thought about applying to UCSF from out of state. Scores, stats, EC's, LOR ...no real concerns...but will being from out of state make it not worth my while to apply? Thanks for your input

if you did your research into the school, they give preference to california residents but encourage out of staters with excellent credentials

Personally, I don't think it's worth it to apply to any state school that accepts over 80% of its people from in-state, unless it is your top choice and your credentials are amazing...but even so, your chances are slim.

It's true they tend to keep it 80% in-state and 20% out-of-state. I'm not going to pretend like I know the school very well because I have yet to attend (I'm a pre-MS1). It's an uphill battle if you're not a California resident. I've met a number of the out-of-state students who will also be first-years and those people are amazing!
I'd say apply because UCSF is selective with who they give secondaries and who they invite to interview. I believe a little over 500 are invited to interview each cycle. If you're interested enough, pay the AMCAS fee. If they like your AMCAS application, pay the secondary fee; the secondary is cake (no essays). And if they invite you for an interview, then you know you've got a decent shot at an acceptance because, relative to many medical schools, they don't invite too many to interview.

hey randal,
i thought you were aiming for mstp. if so, you have nothing to worry about applying to ucsf from out of state. even though unlike most other schools, their mstp office doesn't help out accomodation and there's no fancy meals, they give you vouchers instead, my interview experience at ucsf was one of the most intense yet enjoyable/fulfilling one, esp the mstp part. you'll like it there. talk about the science and the city!!! 👍 👍

like the previous post said, it's definitely worth a shot if you are willing to pay the AMCAS application fee, and then the seconary fee.

hey all,

It's true that I'm applying for MSTP...since I'm interested in continuing my research in neuroscience, specifically neurodegenerative disease and aging, I am attracted to UCSF based on the strength of its neurosci program. I had already done my research into the school (as someone suggested that I do), but wanted to post to see what those in my situation would recommend, so thanks for your input!

I really enjoy Cali, and am starting to tire of the East, especially after working here for a while. We'll see how it goes...a trip to Cali (even at my own expense) would be well worth it!

Thanks!
