I just received an interview invite to a school for the last week of March. Realistically, with a date this late into the application cycle, I assume I'd more or less be interviewing for the wait list?

Most likely interviewing for a waitlist spot would be my guess. You could call the admissions office; they will likely be candid with you about if the class is full yet.

Being on the waitlist isn't all bad either; waitlist spots often turn into acceptances once schools begin shuffling around their rosters.

Where did this rumor start? Unless a school has explicitly told you that you're interviewing for a waitlist position, you should assume you're interviewing for an acceptance and prepare accordingly. You absolutely should go if you can afford it and have no other acceptances you prefer at this point.

Some schools explicitly state they hold acceptance spots for interviewees through the end of their cycle; so it depends on the school. Don't automatically dismiss it if it's a school you're interested in.

I've seen folks accepted outright after a later interview than this one, so you can't necessarily make an assumption about what they're looking for, if it isn't stated. Consider reading through last year's school-specific thread and see if anyone reports either something similar, or brisk waitlist movement, or none, before deciding if it's worth attending the interview.

A lot of UCs are semi non rolling (a certain percentage from each group is always accepted) so you can interview there in March/April and still get accepted - maybe this school is the same. You can always ask. If it's a top choice school for you I'd go for it even if it was for a wait list spot. Every school eventually accepts off the wait list so you can always still do really well and get in after May.

it's completely up to you. Do you have other acceptances? How does this schools rank among your choices? If you can spare the money, it can't hurt

I was upfront about my speculation, hence the second part of my post suggesting that OP contact the admissions office. They will likely tell him upfront if the class is full or not.
