MS4 here going into psych, getting bombarded with emails telling me I'll get a year of AMA membership free (PGY1 year) if I sign up for the AMA this year for $20. I'm wondering if AMA membership will give me any worthwhile benefits for PGY1 year or beyond. I mean $20 could buy like 4 Taco Bell meals so the AMA membership better be worth it.

You're better than taco bell Freddie!

It has been my experience that the biggest benefit of being an AMA member is when you complain to the AMA about their policy they will actually hear you out and respond. However, their responses are often more infuriating than being ignored.

Me? No. I can't say I've ever eaten at Taco Bell. But I think you'd get more for your money there than with the AMA.

Now Chipotle on the other hand ... Yum.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'm having an XXL Grilled Stuft Burrito® tonight.

My toilet, however, does not thank you.

I joined AMA during residency for 1 year and the major benefit I got out of it (other than a year of JAMA ), was that it made me eligible to join Penfed credit union as an AMA member.

They have very good Auto loan rates. (I'm told their HELOC & Mortgage rates aren't bad either).

Once I got that far, I didn't renew the AMA membership.

Honestly, I don't think I'd join the AMA if they paid me $20.

If you are ever down and out, and feel completely lost without any friends... The AMA and the APA will find your address and bill you for your annual dues. Really, they could teach the FBI a thing or two. No one ever tells them they are moving and somehow they find you before anyone. Just like drug dealers, the price is low at first.

Yes its worth it if you want to promote change in your profession through legislation. If you don't care about changing your profession (which is not a bad thing), find legislation stuff boring, and/or want to just focus on residency, then AMA and APA might not be for you. Basically, if you want to get involved and have ideas for change that you want actionable, then join, but if you don't want to get involved, then its not worth it.
