Would AdComs ever ask you to disclose a health issue mentioned in p. statement?

I suffered from a recurring health problem in my undergrad and plan on talking about it in my personal statement. I was not specific about what it was. I want to be forthright with AdComs, but this is something that I would prefer not to talk about in detail with strangers, as it is very personal.

So, you want to talk about it in hopes it helps you get in, but you dont want to talk about it later?

😕😕😕

I wanted to explain that I withdrew a quarter due to health but do not want to go into the specifics if I don't have to. It is uncomfortable for me to talk to a stranger about personal things. I apologize if my original post was unclear.

Someone told me first hand that they had the same problem and they explained it in their personal statement and got in a school. I'm kind of having the same problem with an illness and I plan to explain some of it in my personal statement.

Interesting. I guess to some extent I have to explain myself no matter what. I was just hoping to say "I was sick but I got better" or something like that but it seems like that may not cut it.

Check if the schools you are applying for are open or closed file interview.
If the interview is closed-file interview, the interviewers will not know anything about you, including your GPA, PCAT, extracurricular, and personal statement.
If the interview is open-file interview and if they do bring up your health problem, then I'm hoping you'll at least be comfortable providing a condensed version of what happened and focus more on how you overcame your health problem?

A comfortable way to go about applying is this:

Don't put anything in your app that you aren't ready to talk about.

This.

If you are vague, we (the Director of Admissions and/or your interviewers) are going to ask about it. If you start this process by claiming some 'issue' prevented you from performing your best, be prepared to speak to it. If you can't/won't, then don't bother mentioning it in the first place- you'll make 'em wonder if you are telling the truth.
