My advisor for pre-pharm said it does not help the chance of one getting accepted into a pharmacy school but it might help with the interview. so he told me not to worry about getting a pharmacy technician job at all since it is not that important.

is that true?

I guess it depends on the adcoms committee. I personally believe that it would help in every aspect of your application. Having that experience will allow you to have more meaningful conversations during your interview, will help you write your PS (as you will have a deeper understanding of how a pharmacy operates), and lastly it will be one more thing you can put on your application. Most schools want (some even require) that you have some sort of healthcare experience. Working as a pharm tech is healthcare experience.

Your advisor is whack.

Pharmacy experience is a valuable aspect for any pharmacy applicant. Your advisor doesnt know what hes talking about.

damn it but i am taking 19 hours next semester as a senior and i doubt i would have much time to do much of the job... would they be cool with if i just get like couple months of experience on it?

well, go volunteer on weekend through red cross. You can volunteer as much or as little as you want to.

i have a lot of volunteer hours from my fraternity and other organizations im in, but none of those are health care related...
is health care related volunteer activities better than pharmacy technician experience?

If your applying to pharmacy school, nothing is better than pharmacy experience. Ask your local pharmacy if you can shadow the pharmacist for the day.

I've been hearing that volunteering work doesn't really help, even though I refuse to believe it since I volunteered for a good amount of time. I told my pharmacists and technicians that I work with at CVS that I volunteered at a couple pharmacies for a couple years and they all said I wasted my time. Some of the technicians are applying to pharmacy school right now too.

Regardless, I believe any experience is valuable. If anything, it'll make you look less of a bookworm/lazy bum.

I guess it is time for me to look for a pharmacy technician job... Just to put it down on the resume

I thought have leadership positions in school organizations and stuff is good enough?

You have plenty of EC. It is a little late in the game to get a tech job honestly. You should be fine with just your EC. Pharmacy is not required but rather recommended by schools. I would just stick to your EC's and do well in your last years of undergrad and you will be fine.

I was thinking about just doing maybe 5 hours a week just to have it there and maybe get a pharmacist to write me one of the letter of recommendation. Yay? Nay?

Yes, and even more importantly, it will let you know loud and clear if you really want to do this.

Yes it will help, but will mostly help you to determine if you really want to work in the field. I have met many pharmacists that wish they could go back and do a different route.
