Would it be pointless to apply to UW through WWAMI for me?

Hey there,

So I have pretty low stats and I'm pretty much 100% on the DO train, but a couple of physicians have told me to apply through the WWAMI-Idaho program to UW. I feel like it'd be kind of a joke considering my situation.

GPA: For AACOMAS it'll be ~3.2, but this was due to earlier years and within the last 80 credits I have ~3.5.
MCAT: 7/12/9 28
Volunteering: I'll have ~600 hours when MD applications start.

I'd be crazy to apply here, right? I mean, I'd be auto-screened due to GPA and I'd have to directly contact them to even have my application looked at.

yes go for it. UW has rotations sites in idaho that they want to fill with people that will stay in idaho, you're more likely to stay there if you're from there. the 28 is low for MD, but for WWAMI it should put you in striking range. For GPA, meh you have an upward trend. Not saying you'll get in but your application won't be laughed at

I was going to apply in the next cycle. Is my September 2014 MCAT still going to be good by that point for MD? Most DO schools said yes but a few were starting to say no.

I think it would be worth it - not really anything to lose other than the AMCAS processing fees. Only about 150 people apply to medical school each year from Idaho, ~65 of them get in (via AMCAS data), and half of them apparently matriculate at UW (http://www.uwmedicine.org/education/Documents/md-program/ID-WWAMI-Fact-Sheet.PDF).

One thing to note is that they typically look at the first 90 credits you took to determine your undergrad GPA, so be sure to let them know you have an upward trend if you do so that they don't miss it. (At least that's what their website says).

I think you should definitely apply. A 28 is not a horrible score for Idaho WWAMI students. While many score higher than that, I know students who have gotten in with a 26 and a 24, so it's not a death sentence. I also know some students that had a pretty low undergrad GPAs (as in, lower than yours). UW is that it is super mission based, so it's good to focus on that. If you want help specifically with a UW application, there are a lot of online resources. There are also people that will meet with you to look over your application and give you suggestions at the WWAMI office in Boise. If you want a specific email address, PM me.

It's abysmal. I've retaken a ton of the classes, but averaging a bunch of Ds/Fs to Cs isn't going to put a dent in my GPA.

As a side note, is there a good quick reference I could look to in order to understand the AMCAS process? I know the DO application process well since that's all I've prepared for at this point. I'm going to (hopefully) have a DO letter by the end of the month, but am I now going to need an MD letter to apply to these two schools? Any other things at a glance I should be aware of?

The last time I checked, WWAMI had a different way of calculating GPA than the AMCAS method. They weight junior credits more and freshman credits less. So an upward trend in a traditional college path is more highly rewarded. Make sure you calculate your GPA the Washington way.
