Hello all!

About me:
I recently graduated from my university with my BS in biology.
Overall GPA 3.6
Science GPA 3.89 (worked my bum off for this! But I kinda slacked on the non-sciences, especially philosophy)
I have had many hours of volunteering (shadowed physicians since I was 18)
I am now in graduate school for my Master of Pubic Health.
My research was published a scientific paper in December.
EC: orchestra, member of a volunteer organization, biological honors society

Questions:
I take my MCAT at the end of April. What score should I aim for to get into an MD school? Similarly, what score for a DO school?

Is there anything I can do to improve my resume?

With my stats, which schools (both MD and DO) do you think I would apply to? I'm open to going anywhere in the US!

Any help is much appreciated!

Well I'm certainly no expert on admissions, but I think a 31 would do you a lot of good. If you're talking DO schools, 26 should do the trick. As far as which schools, it's really hard to say. I'm having trouble with deciding where to apply myself. I'd get an MSAR and find schools with avg. matriculant stats close to yours. If the school is public and OOS, make sure you look into their OOS acceptance rates. Also, you should realize that OOS students will probably be more scrutinized at a public school.

30 for md, 27 for a good DO program

Thank you!

So, I have the lucky situation of being a resident of one of two wonderful states. I have lived in California for my entire life and recently moved (last year) to beautiful Illinois.

I own a small business in CA, but I live in and attend grad school in IL.

I am a Hispanic person (in case that matters)

My next question is, with my stats, should I keep my California residency or officially become an Illinois citizen? Does it matter much for my chances? How large of a factor is being an out of state applicant to the (public) medical schools?

I know it is a big factor for certain California public schools. Browse the websites when you get a chance -- many of them state a preference for in-state students. Unless you're particularly drawn to some schools in IL, I'd keep the California residency.

Last year California MD scools only matriculated 841 of 5,326 IS applicants. That's 15.8%.
In contrast, IL matriculated 582 of their 1,972 IS applicants. That's 29.5%.
From a purely statistical view IL is a better bet.

Some of the UC's are actively recruiting OOS residents at the current time.
