Would online science/math classes help improve my application? Will they be factored into your GPA? If not, is it still worthwhile to take an online course to show that you're academically capable? After all, I hear a lot of the first two years of medical school consists of learning and studying on your own.

How will med. schools perceive them?

Has anyone here taken any that they recommend? Would a science/math online course from any school be okay? Does anyone know of a good school that offers online classes?

Thanks for your replies.

No, don't take online classes.

Don't bother. While online courses may reflect the future of education, at present they are not highly regarded by adcoms. They are only really considered equivalent if you are active military personnel and this is the only access you have to the courses. For someone just trying to bolster academic credentials they are a waste of time. Sorry.

Look for classes through extension schools (ex. Berkeley or Harvard, not University of Phoenix). Your transcript will only show the course name and grade; it will not show that you took them online.

Many online classes show up as regular classes on your transcript. Honestly, some online classes are harder than reg. classes because the Prof. knows most people will underestimate it. By finals time, you get so many ppl complaining on the discussion boards about the class being unfair. I personally believe that the amount learned from any class, be it online or classroom, depends entirely on the student. Either way, I'm mostly learning from the book or powerpoint notes given by prof. These 2 sources are given in both classrooms and online classes, so I find both equally viable.

However, ADCOMs will probably look down on online classes, so be careful. Take it in the classroom if there's an option.

There are two kinds of online classes: the ones who provide full degree online and some school that just offer an online class or two. Do not go to the ones that offer degree with online coursework, they're useless even if you can get your degree.

Some schools especially community colleges offer online classes because there are many nontraditional students who work, have family, and can't go to classes. Those online classes taken at a school with a local site don't show up as online classes. Nobody will be able to tell which classes were taken online.

Yes i am 100 percent sure it can improve.
