Would it be OK for someone to apply to the podiatry school and its affiliated medical school? For example, I'm considering applying to Temple pod and md schools. Should I do this or not??

I'm sure it's been done before. A few people each year at DMU probably transfer from DPM to DO program after first year of pod school also. People also apply to say, both MichSt's MD and DO programs. Applying to a school's MD and DPM program or DO and DPM is basically the same thing.

The majority of current pod students have applied to MD, DO, or DDS in the past. Also, most accepted MD students probably applied to other programs as backups unless they had numbers so high the only question was where they were getting in, not "if."

It might raise a quick question at the interview if you're interviewed by someone who is on faculty or an admin for both programs, but it shouldn't be a problem. Just tell Temple MD that podiatry is interesting and it's your backup. Tell the pod school that you are interested in diabetes and ortho and would like to treat them whether it's by the MD or DPM route... "after all, health care professionals are a team that works for the patient."

I agree with most of waht Feli said. But for your own personal happiness, you need to know that you want to be a podiatrist. You should not apply to DPM programs as a backup. I say this b/c if you want to be an MD, then be an MD. Find out why you were not accepted and correct your weaknesses. Don't quit and become a DPM b/c it is easy. You should want to be a DPM not just a doctor.

One more thing i would like to add along with Dr_feelgood is that even though in some pod schools it is easy to get in but being a first year i can guarantee you that surviving in the school is like climbing mount everest. Its sooo freakin hard🙁. If you cant get accepted to medical school then you better sit and analyze your mistakes (as dr.feelgood said) and make yourself right and re-apply. But dont just jump to Pod as a backup school. Believe me it is very very hard and you have to like it to really put that much hardwork and effort in it. If you just entered podiatry as a backup profession than i bet you will be starting to get tired and dislike the material.

Thanks for the insight guys.. I am really not looking at podiatry as a backup plan. I have overlapping interests and goals that could be met by being an MD or DPM. That being said, I just got my MCAT score back, and it was high enough so that I could have a chance at MD or DPM schools. I will apply to both and see where I get in and which school is best for me in the end..

And the reason I was asking about Temple is that I have seen their pod school and really liked it and Philly. But I also want to look into their med school if applying to both wouldn't be a bad idea..

If your scores are good enough from MD programs why not DO? Again, I ask b/c I think you should look at it from all angles.

So, what do others think? Would it be ok for me to apply to Temple's medical school and podiatry school at the same time?

Yes, just explain to them if they ask about it. You should research the podiatry field before you decide though. Besides, I think temple sends out dpm brochures to md applicants.
