I'm from Pakistan, and when thinking of volunteer work that I actually want to do, I can't help but think of doing something there. I know of a small school near the village that my parents are from, and I've emailed the Head master there and he said that I could lead an English & Computer Skills class for my summer.

Now, this isn't through any organization, just me going there to teach some kids. I don't know if this technically counts?

I have the option of raising money here, and seeking donations of different computer devices, and then bringing that back there, and I guess that would seem more organized and legitimate, but I'm still not sure if it would "count."

I mean, there's no reason why it wouldn't, but how would I describe this in AMCAS w/o a specific organization behind it?

You don't need to be in an organization for something to be a legitimate EC. All you need is a contact to verify your activity. You write the description just the same as you would if you were in a organized activity.

Go ahead if doing that interests you as a summer activity.

However, do you see any unmet needs in any community in which you live? During the academic year is there any service you could provide to help the poor, sick, illiterate, elderly, young, etc? (2 hours per week)

Some schools may be looking for applicants who can be contributors to the community so having a track record of doing good in the community is helpful.

I work at a community thrift store/soup kitchen for 4 hours/week. But as far as admissions, I want to stand out, so doing an extensive project like this, wouldn't that create a more memorable application?

Also, I just wanted to do this "project" because I'm not really doing anything this summer, too early to study for the MCATs and I'm not taking any classes, so I thought it would be a good use of my summer.

I just started going to a home for disabled kids with a few friends which turned into a bi-weekly tradition. There's no organization name or person to report to. But it's fun, and I did put it on AMCAS (and I didn't quit after hitting submit either...)
