Hello SDN,

I'm looking for feedback on if it is worth applying this cycle or waiting until next year's cycle, and any suggestions for strengthening my app if I wait to apply for next year's cycle.

A little bit about me: I am a non-traditional student, who graduated from UT Austin with a B.S. Biochemistry (GPA 3.8) slightly over a decade ago. Since then I've been in the workforce. I live in Texas and only plan to apply to state schools.

Looking in to the Texas dental school requirements, I am missing statistics and microbiology, which I will be taking this fall.

Since I have been out of of school over a decade and I will be taking the two missing pre-reqs in the fall, I will not have any letters of rec from professors, nor a health professions office letter. The letters of rec I plan to get are from a boss and a colleague, both of which can evaluate me on leadership, work ethic, etc., as well as a letter from the Dentist I am shadowing.

I reached out to the 3 dental schools here in Texas, and was only able to speak to someone in admissions from Baylor College of Dentistry. They outright told me it wasn't worth applying there because my coursework isn't recent, and therefore I wouldn't be considered competitive for admissions.

This got me worried.

How much might having non traditional LOR's hurt me? Should I apply this cycle to UTHSCSA and UT Houston School of Dentistry, or should I wait until next cycle, when I can get a LOR from a science professor? Anyone know if it will be an issue for the other schools that my pre-reqs are so old?

Have you taken the DAT? I'm not an adcom, but I'd assume a really high DAT would allay any worries that you are too rusty academically. I've no idea if they'd accept your LORs.

You have been out of school for 10+ years, you now have a burning desire to pursue dentistry, but you feel you cannot wait a little longer to get your ducks in line? You already have your answer from Baylor and there is a good chance SA and Hou will also wonder how rusty those neurons are. Why not have the patience to at least talk to your only two alternatives?
