Would you apply with my stats?

sGPA 2.89 (but a 3.09 without the grades from a community college and only the grades from Stony Brook University)
cGPA 3.2 (3.37 with only the grades from Stony Brook.)

I have a BS in psychology, and is a member of the psychology national honor society and the golden key honor society.

MCAT
VS 8 PS 5 BS 8 WS O (first time, last year)
VS 6 PS 10 BS 8 WS M (second time, which I'm extremely disappointed in because I was getting 29-32 on the practices)

I've been volunteering at an ambulance corps for two years (I received an award for second highest hours volunteered during a year, and is the chairperson for the bike committe), EMT for one year. I work full time as an EMT. Struggling with a chronic illness since I was 18 (I'm now 24) and my personal statement is all about my struggles with it including being a guinea pig in a clinical trial. Clinical research for over a year, lab research for a few months.

You will have to include all of the grades from both schools anyways. I would consider retaking courses this year and apply next year if your GPAs are better.

No not this year. Its too late in the cycle and your gpa or your mcat is below average for DO applicants. Retake classes and apply EARLY next year. Look at improving your mcat as well. YOu'll get a shot with a good PS which you say you have.

I also think that you would be better off waiting another year. Firstly, it is very late for someone with moderate stats (I know from experience). Last year my AACOMAS was verified at this time, and I had only one interview invite -- from my regional DO school. (26M, 3.25 sci, 3.35cum).

Secondly, this past year has been really good for my application and my life. I have explored clinical opportunities and volunteer gigs that pertain to my future vision of medicine. I think this will make a huge difference in admission committee eyes. I have also retaken my two weakest courses, and I dominated them when I could just focus on them alone (I would recommend this for you, since you have already re-taken the MCAT once).

Take a year for yourself, improve your application, and apply on the first day possible next cycle . Don't give up

I'd really hate to wait yet another year. I graduated in December. I've been working full time as an EMT, which is not the best job here on Long Island. I work 40 to 60 hours a week and still barely able to pay my bills. I just want to get my life started instead of waiting again. I'm currently enrolled in biochem. All my sciences are in the B range, with one or two A's. Would retaking a class or two actually bring up my gpa? I've taken so many credits that my gpa will barely improve. Is it really considered late to apply even though most DO schools have a deadline in january/february?

How bad is it to reapply if I don't get accepted this year?

Yes it is getting late in the cycle. Most schools have already handed out interviews with some already handing out acceptances. Your low stats do not help your case as well. I'm not a re-applicant but i am assuming that you have to show improvement to them

I would say that it is ok to be a re-applicant. I did so this year and was accepted into a program a month ago. Last year I got my application out really late. This year I submitted it the first day possible. Even if you apply this year though, I would retake some classes. That way if you do not get in your application will be better and earlier. Best of luck.

Yes, retaking a couple classes and getting As would really bring up your gpa for AACOMAS because of grade replacement.

It's also probably too late this cycle if you haven't started collecting LORs. You will need one from a DO for most DO schools, although some accept an MD letter. This is the part that delayed my app the most, even though I was verified in May and submitted in June.

The late deadlines (Jan/Feb) probably only work well for people with stellar stats and amazing ECs. Otherwise it's incredibly important to apply early.

I also think it might be a red flag to the adcoms if you've mostly gotten Bs in your sciences with only a couple As. The sGPA is really important. This would be the best place to utilize grade replacement, especially since it's less credits than your cGPA and would probably rise quickly with several As.

cute avatar btw 🙂
