The national high average is 1.2 million! This has been discussed before, but I am curious to see what your guys opinions are.

It's also been discussed that the salary on prospectivedoctor was most likely an error. Do your homework, son.

Hahaha.

Honestly, if I was considering any surgical subspecialty, it would probably be colorectal. I've personally known a lot of ostomy patients, they have it rough. 🙁

I spent 2 weeks on colorectal surgery during my surgery rotation and did more rectals and saw more *******s than I EVER wanted. In short, no. Even $1.2 million wouldn't convince me.

Why not? By the time I get exposed to med school, I will probably get used to the ick factor.

if I did mostly anorectal work, no, but they do a lot of really awesome abdominal cases. The lifestyle is pretty good, and it's very easy for a colorectal surgeon to keep a good mix of general surgery as well, since they're extremely competent surgeons in the abdomen. It's tempting, but it's highly competitive.

Sure, why not. But nobody can really know if they'd like something until they have a deep understanding of what it is they're getting into.

What you did there.

I see it.

When you say that, do you mean more like, "Getting into Med school" competitive or "Getting into Derm/Ophtho/Rads" competitive?

gas = anesthesia

Thanks for clarfiying for the n00b.

Colorectal isn't a specialty you match into from med school. It's a subspecialty that you do a fellowship in from general surgery.

I'd do it. I hear they get a ton of ass.

Yes, I'm aware, I was trying to get a gauge for the relative degree of "competitiveness," like, is it competitive as in getting into med school? Which is relatively doable compared to trying to match into Derm, which is darn near undoable. Where in the spectrum of competitiveness does CR Surgery fall?

I'm actually aiming to be a colorectal surgeon. Sure the subject matter may be a little aversive, but I've seen how needed good colorectal surgeons are, and I would like to be able to help people who really need that sort of work done.

God knows we need more men for our asses.

They say that in medicine, you have to pick one bodily fluid/disgusting thing that you're okay with and stick to that. This is especially true for surgery and surgical subspecialties. Colorectal = ****, ENT = snot, urology = urine, plastics = disgusting wounds, etc. **** is not my thing that I'm okay with.

In the last few years, the match rate has been 65% or so. That means out of the people in general surgery residencies (which is moderately competitive) who decide to apply, 1/3 of them won't get a spot at all. That's pretty high...

A colorectal surgeon told me he got alot of ass one night,...........he had to do some deep sutures too.......
Okay lets start over, if you have a kid, and on career day he said, " my dady does..........
Okay...okay, it's a respectable job. Some one has to do it and love his patients.

I'm going to do what I like to do. If I just happen to get a "high" from looking at anuses, then that's what I'm going to be waking up everyday to do.
