Can someone who is currently pracricing dentistry right now tell me whether they would choose dentistry over again if given the chance?

i am trying to decide etween medicine and dentistry and the same post over in the meds forum received some mixed responses...some of which were very bitter and cynical. So I was just wondering how dentists feel about their careers?...Do you enjoy getting up to go to work every morning or do you jsut do it to pay off your loans?

thank you for your time 🙂

I love what i do... would do it over again... true I into Oral Med/Oral Path/Hosp Dent and teaching... but i love it

You're going to get a mixed bag from ANY profession. There are things I love about it, and things I hate about it. All in all, the good outweighs the bad. What I like about dentistry is:

Be your own boss.
Freedom to run your practice the way you want.
Set your own hours.
Work with my hands.
Financial rewards.
Meet lots of interesting people.

What I don't like:
Some procedures... for example, I don't like seeing young children, but I do it anyways.
Demanding/perfectionist patients.

So yes, I would do it over again.

I love the profession more each day. I could never have imagined making such a good career choice. I would never change professions.

You should go medicine. Dental school is too hard for people who are uncertain. If you go with med school you'll have the satisfaction of a career as a MD or DO.

I am more sure of dentistry now then when I was applying.

i would absolutely not choose dentistry again....run away NOW! 😱

can u pls elaborate??...why were you unsure when you first went into it? Wasn't it a little scary for you to go into something you weren't sure about? What changed that made you so sure about dentistry?

You can never be 100% sure about anything. What makes you so sure you'll be a competent doctor? Will you be able to handle the stress of medical school? What if you make a fatal error which negatively impacts a patient? Why do you really want to be a doctor, do you want to help people or is it a status thing?

Sorry I wasn't trying to attack you, I was trying to make a point. I thought a lot of these things(from a dental point of view). I feel health care is a serious business and any decision to pursue a career in it should not be taken litely. I had cold feet this last August, I will admit.

I don't know when I became more sure about my decision, maybe it was when I was wearing my scrubs at the grocery store and a person working the check out asked me about Marquette's clinic(she was in a lot of pain). It was then it really sunk in what I was doing, it was then when I realized people were going to look to me to for help. Not that I didn't people were going to come to me for help, but it really sunk in at that moment.

You need to have thick skin, and learn not to sweat the small stuff. There are thousands of crazies out there, and you sure as hell cant make everyone happy. Nevertheless, I love what I do.

Definitely agree. I had a crazy patient walk out of the clinic on me this morning because I told him we were going to reline his upper denture today like we agreed at his last appointment, instead of making him a new set in 15 minutes (start to finish!) like he insists I promised him at his last visit.

On top of that, whoever processed my three denture deliveries today was completely asleep at the wheel. Two of them required a combined 75 minutes at a lathe grinding out undercuts, and the third (my personal favorite) was an overdenture where the lab just ground off the abutments before processing.

My personal opinion is that how you respond to days like mine today will determine, in large part, your happiness with the profession. You can internalize it, make everything your fault, and probably end up hating dentistry...or you can breathe a sigh of relief that even though you worked late it's not even 6:00 yet, and leave work at work while you go spend the evening playing volleyball at church. 😀
