let's say you got into your school of choice and they didn't require one of the classes you were currently taking this spring. would you withdraw from it so that you can put more time toward the other classes that are needed? or would you finish it?

and let's say though the transcript that you must turn in by end of spring for those last pre-reqs will also show the dropped class...woudl this persuade you not to drop so that the adcom would not see the W?

it's for a friend 😉

I was in this same predicament before and I withdrew from the class. In my eyes there is no need to waste time on a class that you dont need. Who cares if the adcom does see the W. You are already in, and there usually are not any rules about having a W.

Just double check that its ok with the school you are planning on going to. I can't imagine that it'd be a problem, but better safe than sorry.

My 23 Ws didn't hurt me. I'd say drop it.

LOL-

Thanks. I sent ...uh hem I meant my "friend" sent the email off to double check anyway but most likely will drop it. it is a physics lab, 1 credit so no biggie.

thanks everyone!

I just dropped 9 units. It seemed like a no brainer. I did check with the school first, but most schools I don't think have a problem with it.

If it's not a class that you (or your friend 😉 )need, and especially if it's a physics lab (yuk), drop it.

Congrats on your (er, your friend's) acceptance!

I just got accepted into USN and they dont need Physics and Economics...I've been taking these courses for other schools. Since USN's my first choice, I'll be dropping these courses today...for sure!

I never thought school would have prob with withdrawing classes.... I already did. What's so wrong with doing that? It's not a F, why is it bad?

I am just curious...

Same here, i dropped 2 classes. One of them was the day after the add/drop deadline (abotu 2 weeks into a semester). I just didnt think it would ever be a problem

Ironically, I was in that position this semester and I was having the same debate.....to have the W, or to not have the W. I have the W, now. My grade for the remaining class has improved greatly, enough for me to say it was worth taking the W on my transcript. After finding out that the class was not required, I could not see spending as much time and energy on it as I had been previously when it would not benefit me to have the grade for it.

If you received fin aid, you'll have to pay some of it back if you drop below full time. That would be the only reason I'd stick with the class. If not, take the W

i took the W, but i checked with the school first. They told me as long as it doesn't affect the gpa it's fine.

thanks!!! i'm still on cloud 9...

for the financial aid situation, check with your school. i had to wait until after the add/drop date to withdrawal from a class, but when I withdrew, I didn't have to pay anything back. dropping doesn't put anything on your transcript but you usually only have 1-2 weeks. a withdrawal is what gives you the W and you have till midterm (at least at my school.)

I don't see how dropping it would affect your chances, however it won't hurt to take 2 minutes to double check with your school. The only concern, aside from financial aid, that I could possibly think of is that your school might want you to evaluate how well you perform given your workload, even if it isn't a pre-req.
