Hi all! I am curious as to what you guys think about my current situation.

I have already interviewed at UConn, Nova, NYU, and UW. I have one more interview at Case on November 28th. Here is my question:

Even though Case accepts 70-90% of their out of state interviews, would you still go if it would cost you about $1100 for the whole trip (flight, hotel, car rental, etc), while being borderline pre Dec 1st? I don't really have this kind of money sitting around since I just paid for my previous flights, hotels, etc. I should include that I'm not too concerned with the pre Dec 1st thing, because I don't think it will change my chances at Case much. I'm mostly torn because I applied there, and have been offered an interview there, and REALLY don't want to waste this opportunity.

Honestly, if I had the cash, it would be no problem for me - I would go for sure. I would like to increase my chances of admission that much more, but since I'm tight on money, what would you do?

Thanks in advance 👍

Depends. If you're confident that out of your four so far, you'll get one acceptance AND Case doesn't rank very high for schools you want to go to, then don't go if the financial hardship will be too great. If you can muster the money or put it on a card/loan whatever, then I think it's better you do go. Maybe you'll be surprised with the school and it'll be your new #1.

Your stats are fantastic, and I'm sure you're expecting multiple Dec. 1st acceptances. Is Case still a contender for you? If you can't see yourself relocating to Cleveland, OH, maybe you should save that $1100..

Wow $1100? I saw your stats and I've also been reading your post. I have no doubt that you can get in more than one of four. Especially, it looks like your state school likes you. If possible, I would call Case and delay the interview to post-dec, then see whats up. If not, just save your money for celebration later

For the most part, numbers don't matter during the interview. As long as you're not socially awkward and confident that you knocked your interviews out of the park...then go ahead and skip out on the interview.

I would go. Worst-case scenario you aren't accepted anywhere, you will be kicking yourself for not going. And then if you are not accepted, will you have the money to re-apply? Yes, it is a lot of money, but in the grand scheme of things, I would do it.

With money tight...and honestly I'm in a similar situation to you (except not involving Case)...no, I would not go. You're going to get in elsewhere. Save the grand.

save your cash! or ask them to postpone the interview past dec 1 so you have a choice.

You've got great stats! But again, I agree with a poster from above, you're going to be kicking urself in the @$$ if for some crazy reason, you don't happen to get in anywhere else. I interviewed at Case last week thinking it was sort of a back-up school, but I was EXTREMELY impressed with the campus, faculty, and students, everyone really seemed to love it there. Again, I would go. PM me, if your interested, and I can let you know how I saved a few bucks in terms of motel and car rental...public transport there was really a $$ saver!

Goodluck!

I'm like 95% sure that you will get accepted into one of the schools you interviewed at, but personally if it were me I'd rather be safe than sorry. If it's a chance your willing to take then go for it! 👍 Either way I'm sure you will be starting dental school next year 😀

I was in a similar situation. I ended up rescheduling to after Dec 1. This particular school was not in my top choices so for me, it was easier to postpone. However, I wouldn't cancel because what if there's that chance that you don't get in anywhere (which, with your stats I doubt will happen 🙂). Then you'll still have an interview post-Dec.

Now the other aspect is the whole "What if you fall in love with the school?" I guess that's just something you'll have to decide for yourself. If you already like the schools that you interviewed at and can imagine yourself going there, then I suppose it will be easier for you to change the CASE date.

Good luck!

I would tell most people to go but since its you, Bereno.

You don't have to.

If it were me, I would go. But I think you're set to receive at least a few more interviews in the future. So if Case isn't a top choice, then fuhgeddaboutit.

Go dude.
You never know until you get that acceptance letter. $1100 is nothing if you get in.

I wonder if Nov 28 is even considered Pre Dec because it's not too far before Dec 1 .. if it's not Pre Dec, maybe you could consider changing the interview date if there are any openings?

Wow... I am surprised that so many of you responded! Thanks for all the replies thus far 👍

I am glad that I asked, because I really like the idea of postponing the interview (thanks!) to see if I get a Dec 1st-ish acceptance. I know that I have solid stats, but there is still that chance that I don't get in (duh). I ran some numbers earlier this morning and I think there was a 90% (+/- 2%) of me being accepted without going to Case, and a 98% (+/- 2%) with Case. These were based on Doc's numbers, so take it for what its worth. I know that probability can't really be applied in a situation like this because they have already decided, or I have the attributes they want, or I dont (EI, 100%, or 0% chance of admittance; no probability). I know how to use stats, so I don't want to get into a probability debate here haha. HOWEVER, using the numbers it seems pretty likely that I gain admittance either way. I guess what it comes down to is "how likely is likely enough for me" given the cost of it? I don't know... In the event that I dont get into my current 4, I would definitely kick myself... however, I don't really believe in "shoulda, coulda, wouldas"

I think a good way to mitigate these numbers is to postpone the interview if I can. So, how would I tell them I want to postpone? Would I just say, that the date no longer works for me and leave it at that? 👍

Also, I thought about maybe getting a refundable ticket; does anyone have any insight on this? I figure, that if I get a Dec 1st acceptance, then maybe I could refund the flight and not go... Seems like a good way to hedge my bets.

yeah, it's borderline. I dont think I would call it pre-dec 1st though. The problem is that I would have to fly out there before Dec 1st. I would rather have it Dec 5th or 12th so that I could decide not to go should I get an acceptance.

I dunno much about stats, so I'll pretend you're right! haha.

I think saying the date no longer works is fine... things come up, professors don't let you miss class etc etc... I'm sure they'll assume one of those.

A refundable ticket for a Post-Dec 1 interview date, you mean? Sounds like a good idea, if you can do it!

That's what I would do: reschedule for a later date after you receive your Dec. 1 decisions at which you can decide in Case if Case was still in the running.

Definitely just spring for a refundable ticket. Thats what im doing and im from the same area Bereno. Sure its expensive but cut the loan and realize that its an insurance policy. you NEVER know what interviewers might be thinking/have thought of you so for me its always better to play as many as you can just to be safe. 1100 now is better than like 3-5k again next year to apply. Im doing refundable since im past Dec 1st just so i can refund if i get in somewhere else

Hey Bereno, I would stick to your plan and go post-december. Just call them up and tell them you'd like to reschedule. Lots of people will probably give up spots after December 1st once their state schools/early interview schools accept them.

refundable tickets are usually more expensive so watch out, i saw call them reschedule and move on! you have had a lot of interviews and will get into 1 school for sure.

just a thought, if you're looking to save money. you could always just fly there the night before and arrive early in the morning (~6:00am) and then go straight to case from the airport (the RTA is pretty accessible/easy to use). and then schedule your flight out after your interview is done. (no hassle for car or hotel). since you're from washington, i'm sure they have those kind of flights from the airports. i understand that there are loads of problems in this plan but if money is the only thing holding you back, being a little tired/worn out at the interview is better than not going at all 🙂

Don't go. Worst case scenario is you don't get in anywhere? Unlikely! If that happens you can come work at my office for a year and reapply. 😀

Haha! I will hold you to it!! 😀

I think as of now I am going to call them and try to reschedule. Thanks for the input guys (and girls), I really appreciate it! 👍
