If you had a choice and only could do one or the other, would you choose to have a 100 million dollar winning lottery ticket or get into a top choice med school (Harvard, UCSF, <insert your fav med school here>).


I mean I know a lot of us want to do some good in the world with a degree in medicine, but imagine what you could do with 100 mill.

BUT

If you take the 100 million you could never go to any med school ever for the rest of your life.

FYI: There's a show on cable (Bravo, maybe TLC) about lottery winners and how they all end up going down the tubes. Not terribly relevant to the question, but a great show to watch.

Take the $100m and go to some other school. You can do a lot more good with $100m than a better name on your CV.

I figured it would be money vs medicine.

The truth is I think I'd prefer medicine. I'd have money and something to do. If I won a whole lot of money, I'd still want to work becaue I'd get really bored. I don't really want to do anything other than practice medicine, so I don't know if it's a worthy tradeoff for me.

Though if someone was seriously offering me $100m I might be pursuaded. That kind of money changes lives for generations.

no, not really. money would take away my ambition and desire to succeed. and that would turn me into a boring diamond globule. and misery would follow. i chose the med school option, and would choose it anytime over the money. call me crazy😛

p.s. it doesn't even have to be a top ten school. any allo US school is fine.

I would rather be a doctor even if it meant making 35k a year after loan payments. I'd much rather be poor and happy than rich and bored. Sure, going on trips, hanging out and being a bum, and doing things I enjoy would be nice for a while, but I've done that in the past (well, not the trips part) and it gets boring after a while.

I could do a lot of good with that much money.

Plus if I could afford to give my kids everything I want to while staying at home full-time - thats my ideal life.

Spend time with my kids and family, do volunteer/philanthropic work for the community. Thats my dream come true.

Medicine is just the best, most realistic means for me to do that.

If I had another means - hell yeah - I'd take it in a heart beat.

You can do whatever you want with that much money. ****, the interest alone would be way more than I could spend or give away. Throw it in a freakin money market and get 5%, or $5M each and every year.

You could do A LOT of good with $100M. You could also hire some of the smartest people on the planet to teach you, one-on-one, everything you'd ever learn in med school. Then build your own hospital overseas, and hire your own staff. Make your own clinical experiences. Crown yourself "Best Doctor Ever" and then go save lives left and right. Sure, you may not have the "MD" in this scenario, but that doesn't stop you from being a doctor. You're just missing a diploma. And for that, you've saved countless lives and improved God knows how many others.

If you truly cared about "helping" other people, you would take the 100 mil. As a doctor, sure you can treat people, but the number of patients you can treat are limited. If you had 100 mil to contribute to charity, you would have a greater impact upon a lot more people.
