sell your eggs/sperm to pay for vet school tuition? i looked up at the advertisement banner on sdn and noticed a link to selling eggs for $5-8k (not sure sperm collection makes much money). just think....7 cycles of self-injecting FSH and LH, skipping your menstrual cycle, and getting needles stuck in your ovary and a year is paid off!!

This is a little tongue in cheek, but how awesome would it be to be able to have children, and then get to skip their teenage years? I say this is as a high school teacher who loves her students but can't imagine how their parents spend 15 hours a day with them 😱

And think of all the childless couples that could be happy. I would do it I think.

that's a good question. on one hand, i don't want children myself but there are so many people who do, that can't, and why shouldn't i help them out. as far as i know there isn't a good reason why my eggs aren't viable, and it may be the next best thing to being a surrogate mother (which is something i'm absolutely positive i couldn't do!). But on the other hand, i am under the impression that it is an extremely painful process; and i'm not exactly fond of the idea of injecting myself full of hormones, i have enough as it is! but then there's the debt.... and i might do almost anything to get myself out of debt.... ugh

No, I would not. The procedures used to retrieve the eggs can put your health at risk. Many women do fine with one or two cycles of retrieval but some do not. Weight gain, hormone fluctuation etc can affect your heart your endocrine system, your future fertility, and your cancer risk (I know my doctors will NOT allow me to every go through egg retrieval because of my breast cancer risk). Now if they started harvesting parts of your ovary and then stimulating in vitro (which can be done now) I'd say think about the ethical consideration for yourself. But that option isn't used for egg donation.

That being said many people do want children and cannot conceive and carry their own. Perhaps we should have better incentives for unwanted pregnancies to become babies for adoption... but that's just my bias showing🙂

I certainly am not against donating eggs for moral reasons, but from what I hear the process is painful, extensive and full of rules and regulations. I'm not sure that I want children (leaning heavily to no) but I always joke with my friends that its a shame I won't pass on my genes (I'm just slightly pretentious 😉 ).

As for what bubbles said about many couples wanting children, while this is true instead of incentives for unwanted pregnancies maybe those people should consider donating one of the thousands of slightly older children in foster homes ... but I suppose thats just my bias showing 😉

considering how much my *normal* cycle affects my life/ability to function with all those fun things like bloating, cramping, bleeding, mood swings, migraines... there's no way in HELL I want to deal with the possibility of that getting WORSE while I'm in school!

If you went to a top (or certain) school you can make more money. I know in the Duke paper there used to be ads for 20-25k for one cycle. I wouldn't do it....not because I wouldn't want to help a family out, but because my body doesn't even take birth control well, much less huge doses of hormones.

On a different note, I've heard that when you break down the time and inconvenience of the procedure the 5-8K really doesn't amount to much. I wouldn't do it because you can't "make it" while you're going through this and I think my b/f would leave me... No he wouldn't really! I would probably cheat though and end up not getting paid!

I personally wouldn't do this. But if you do decide to be careful. I can't remember where I saw it, but I read a newspaper article that said to be careful because the pay doesn't cover most of the medical expenses that are incurred and if there is a complication, they usually don't pay for that, either, and they can cost thousands.😱

It's actually something I was looking into last week, interesting that it's coming up now. I'm already joining the Army to defray some of the costs. The risks are really what scare me. I know I want kids later on, and I don't want to risk future infertility. I would certainly look into it thoroughly first.

As far as passing my genetics on to children I don't know, well I don't mind that. I would be happy knowing that I made a family's dream possible, and also that I could spread some of my genetics around 😛 As veterinary students, we're quite desirable. This may sound a bit elitist, but I would rather my genes were out there than someone who barely graduated high school.

Of course, if my husband and I weren't allowed to "make it" for more than a cycle's length, the money totally isn't worth it. I totally understand your poing QTKitty 😀

Yes definitely! I wish I could. My biological parents are already out there wandering around there somewhere (I was adopted) so why not my kids, too?
Ironically, for that very reason, I cant donate eggs - I have no family history. Oh well.

😱 I would have to say no. Not that I don't want to look at naked girls and proceed to get milked, but I just feel it is rather dehumanizing. Especially since I have extensive experience in equine and bovine repro, including A.I. and embryo transfers. The money would be nice, but there are too many moral, religious, and ethical reasons for me not to pursue money in this fashion. However, a friend of mine has been on the list to donate her eggs to pay for dental school. And, considering her finances, (and the 100K one can acquire in debt to pay for a professional degree) I could see how this could be a viable option for some folks. I would consider talking to a priest, preacher, pastor, medicine man; etc. before proceeding, in order to better understand the moral culpability involved with such procedures and then do some serious soul searching. Just my take, please don't take offense.

The hormones made her so crazy she couldn't sit through most of our one-hour classes without crying, let alone study at night! When she wasn't crying she was sleeping all day. Moral/health issues aside, I don't think it would be an option for me after seeing firsthand what it's like. As a vet student, I wouldn't want anything that distracting!

That's what I've heard too. I don't personally know anyone who did it, but our repro professor was telling us about all the bad side-effects and the horrible hormonal emotional rollercoaster it is- not to mention the painful needles and extractions. His information came from his knowledge of the profession and some students who have done it and shared all the details with him. No thanks!

I don't think I want kids, but I think if I was going to have children that weren't genetically mine, I might as well adopt and avoid the 9-month pregnancy and childbirth. Do the couples feel like the children are more "theirs" because the woman bore them? -oh, I guess the children are probably from the father's sperm though, aren't they? Either way, no thanks.
