Hey everyone,

I am reapplying in June and have a question for ya'll. I have been working for a dentist for about 5 months and I asked her for a letter of recommendation. She said she wants me to write it myself, then maybe she'll edit it, then sign off on it. Has anyone had to write their own letter like this? I don't think I even know exactly what goes in a letter of recommendation. Is there some sort of standard way of writing one? Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially since I have no idea what to do.

Thanks Again,
BKelly

Yeah I had to do it for a previous employer... it was one of my letters that my schools pre health committee required (one of the many ridiculous req's). The basics of an LOR are:

-who the author is
-how they know you and for how long
-basic summary of your duties and responsibilities
-highlighting any strengths you have or anything you've done to go "above and beyond"
-why you're well suited for whatever it is they're recommending

The first and last paragraph should probably say something along the lines of "I unequivocally recommend so and so for admittance to dental school" or something like that.

When I wrote mine, I made it excellent. If they're going to give you the opportunity to write your own, be honest, but not overly modest. It's your opportunity to brag a little. It's a little weird to write in the first person for someone else, about yourself, though.

Hope this helps.

The number of hours that you shadowed/volunteered for should be in the letter for sure.
