Writing about a speeding ticket

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Everyone gets speeding tickets...these are what we call petty crimes. They are only called crimes because they are in violation of some rule or regulation, but do not count towards the make-up of a criminal record. I doubt there'd be any problem with talking about a mere speeding ticket on the secondary application. I'd be willing to bet about 80% of the adcoms themselves have gotten speeding ticket at one time or another. It happens to the best of us.

Now if you went on and talked about the first time you smoked pot and fell off the golden gate bridge...that's a different story ;0...DONT TELL THEM THAT 😀

is this for university of chicago? i wrote about a very personal problem on my secondary for there and got an interview. i knew i was taking a chance in writing it but it was my honest response to their question. i don't think a speeding ticket is necessarily the best thing to write about though since to me it doesn't seem like its a big enough stressor for that question. they want you to talk about who you turned to for support and stuff. do you have anything else you are thinking about using?

Hi CarleneM. This secondary is actually for UIC. The exact question is, "Describe an episode that put you under a great deal of stress. How did you handle the episode and the stress? Reflecting upon it, would you handle it the same or differently and why?" Now that you mention being very personal on your applications, I could write about a health-related issue that occurred a few years ago. It was a time when I thought I might've had cancer, but it turned out that the lump was benign. The most stressful part was waiting for the test results from the biopsy, and during that time, I did turn to certain people for support. Do you think that is something appropriate to write about?

Thanks.

write about the cancer thing.

writing about how stressed you were over a speeding ticket is pretty weak, even if it meant a lot to you.

yes, that's much better. since its health-related it can be tied in to how you will relate to patients going through similar ordeals. its definitely much richer and less risky than the speeding ticket.

the purpose is to see how you act and dealt with the pressure; what could you have done that made getting a speeding ticket diff. than for anyone else? poop your pants?

that is a perfect thing to write about. Glad it was benign. 👍

One of the questions on my secondary application asks me to discuss a time when I was under a lot of stress. Basically, the school wants to know how I dealt with the situation and how I grew from it. For the most part, I handle situations calmly and without much stress, so the only idea I came up with was the time I got my first speeding ticket. The reason it was stressful was, I wasn't intentionally speeding. I was lost and was paying attention to my directions instead of the speed limit signs. I also mistakenly thought I was on a highway. Overall, it was a growing experience for me, though, because I learned to be more vigilant, not negligent.

I know a speeding ticket isn't that big of a deal. In Illinois, it is not considered a misdemeanor or felony; it is simply a moving violation. However, my dilemma is, do you think med schools will frown upon me if I disclose this information (even though I grew from it)? If so, I'm not sure if there's anything else worth writing about.

Thank you in advance for your responses.

if i was on an adcom, and a student had a personal statement where they tried to show how well they handled the stress of a speeding ticket, i'd probably have a good laugh before putting their application at the bottom of the stack.

it's just not that big of a deal, i mean, the question adcoms will have is if a speeding ticket caused such stress, how in the world are you going to handle medical school?

write about the cancer scare. that's a much better topic. it shows that you've been on both sides of medicine and because of that have a better understanding of health care.

 exactly...I like the cancer one better. you can relate to patients, something that is highly looked for now a days.
