I'm under the impression that we shouldn't write about reapplication in the other common secondary prompts.

I'm wondering for optional essays or 'extenuating circumstances' essays, if I have nothing else I'd like to mention, would it be alright to discuss my reflections from failing to get into medical school and deciding to reapply? I had several activities since then that confirmed my decision to pursue medicine and have made me into a stronger, more resilient person.

Or is it better not to mention this at all and keep it blank?

As a reapplicant, do not do this. Every question has its own purpose, and this is not it.

In fact, I would try not mentioning you are a reapplicant at all. If the secondary asks you if you are a reapplicant, I would first read the question very carefully. For example, if you did not apply to XYZ School of Medicine last year, and they say "Have you applied to XYZ School of Medicine previously?", I would answer "No". If the question instead is "Have you applied to any medical schools previously?", then I would answer "Yes". Don't try to let everyone know you are a reapplicant, and be honest.

Extenuating circumstances is for extenuating circumstances. Being a reapplicant is not an extenuating circumstance.

Extenuating circumstances. Read.

Also, being a reapplicant is rather "normal" in medical school admissions.

Why don't you just write about the recent experiences and what you learned from the without discussing the previous rejection. You wanted to explore medicine or research or community service further. Period. And you did XYZ and learned ABC and contributed whatever.
