So I'm currently waitlisted at NYU. I have an acceptance to MWU-IL. I'm leaning heavily towards attending MWU-IL (already put down deposit). However I can't help but wonder if I should make a stronger effort to try to get into NYU. I don't know if a letter of intent would help out much. I do understand that if you write one, you are informally bound to attend that institution right?

By going to MWU I will save over 40K. It doesn't seem like a lot but I already owe money from undergrad as well as from my SMP (50K). I'm sure MWU will be good but I'm just concerned about being the inaugural class.

Any advice? Should I keep pursuing NYU or just go ahead and go to MWU-IL? Thanks SDN!

Your information says dental student? 😕😕😕

Anyway, what I would do is see if you would go to NYU over MWU. It seems silly, and kind of rude to get an acceptance at NYU and then not go after showing intent to attend. If you decide that you would go to NYU over MWU, then go ahead and send them a letter.

Midwestern has become pretty well established in AZ so being part of the Downers Grove inaugural class wouldn't be such a bad thing IMO.

You mean your effort thus far was not the strongest effort you could muster? "Informally" bound? Since you have not been accepted, you must be talking about writing a"letter of intent" to get serious about your effort.

I would give it a last shot and send them the letter. time is running out and it can only help you.. GL

You SHOULD write them a letter informing how deeply interested you are in their program if you are INTERESTED. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing this!!!!! If they decide to give you an acceptance than you still have option to choose as you would like. Schools understand that many, many factors come into play when choosing schools and I believe that gaining acceptances changes how people view schools because now the reality of having that decision is truly in your hands...... and you just have to make the best decision with the information you have at hand at the time of making that decision. There is no such thing as being informally bound to a school.....

I agree. You should think long and hard about how likely you would accept NYU's offer if accepted. It would be rude to the school and to other waitlisted applicants if you wrote a letter of intent and end up declining their offer at the last minute. You might go on the school's informal $h*t list.

Once youve decided that you would indeed attend NYU over MWU, then YES YOU SHOULD QUICKLY CALL/ WRITE A LETTER DESCRIBING your dilemma to the admission office. In particular, you should try to address/contact Dr. Mejia the Dean of Admissions.

Ive heard of students who were in similar situations to yours, and Dr. Mejia pulled the right strings to get those students an expedited acceptance.

Maybe Dr. M didn't meet his quota and did indeed had to "pull some strings to get those students an expedited acceptance". You mean there are different kinds of acceptance and some qualify as "expedited"?

I think you already decided.

Sometimes, dental schools are very spastic and odd with the way things are handled. Its not all perfect and democratic and systematic all the time.

Simply put, YES, students actually do help themselves get into dental schools when they create a bit of attention towards themselves via a call/email.

It may sound hard to believe, but Ive heard of more stories than I have fingers about student who have had a direct affect on their acceptance at certain schools simply because they made an extra effort to show their interest in a school.

However, do mind my choice of words (ie. "Expedited acceptance"). This may sound like something its not.

Save that money man...everything about NY is just too expensive!
