Hi guys! At this point in the cycle I have been fortunate enough to receive a few acceptances from DO schools. However, my top choice remains an allopathic school in my hometown, which I am waitlisted at post-interview. I Interviewed early November and this school is notorious for placing a lot of students on (and later taking them off!) the waitlist.

I was planning on sending a letter of intent to this school and I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to when to send this. The email I received from them in December informed me I would probably not hear from them until April, but I want to convey that they are my top choice and I will 100% attend if I am offered acceptance.

If anyone has any tips on how to write a letter of intent and when I should send it, please let me know!

The general consensus for LOIs is that they don't hold much weight (if any) because it is just words. You are under no obligation to actually attend that school even if you write a nice letter. You are probably better served to send an update if they allow it and you have something to update them on.

For an update, it varies from school to school, but keep it short and sweet.

N=1, I was deferred post-interview and after writing a LOI that included an update, got the blessed A. PM me if you have any questions

And how would you interpret a nonbinding contract from a desperate applicant?

@KaioKaizen do you think it is worth writing the LOI if it does not contain an update? (and you've already sent in 2 updates previously)? Debating sending an LOI to a school I'm waitlisted at...already sent one update pre-interview and one update post interview (pre-waitlist)

I have heard from some advisors and current students of the school that they are receptive to the LOI. I figured it couldn't hurt as long as there was an update in there as well.

Then why did you ask? Especially if you are including an update. You never mentioned an update in your OP.

I’m sorry if my OP was unclear! I wasn’t asking SHOULD I send one, I was trying to ask WHEN would be a good time to send it (immediately vs waiting closer to April because that’s when they said I would hear back around). I was also trying to get a feel for what content should be included in it, and I guess I had assumed an update should be included in it. My bad! sorry!

hey OP you might find this page helpful it talks about how to write letter of intents and also when to send them etc 🙂 it says usually about a month after your interview so if you interviewed in November I would honestly just write one now
