Wrong School?

Has anyone ever felt like they chose the wrong school? Not having very many friends here or a support network has left me very homesick. Unfortunately, I was accepted to my state school. I decided not to go there b/c I didn't like the program. It was only slightly less expensive. Instead, I'm stuck here and don't like the city and feel very alone. I don't think that transferring is much of an option. Anyone ever had a similar situation? I'm also worried that if I want to go back to MN to do peds that there is only 1 program in the twin cities ( U of MN).

I'm sort of in an opposite situation. I was accepted to lots of great places but chose to attend my state school even though I purposely did my undergrad out of state. Sometimes I wish I had chosen that amazing school on the East coast, but I'm still glad I made the decision that I did. I think we'll always have that kind of "grass is greener on the other side" mentality, but if we had chosen the other side, we would still wish we had picked the other decision. Surely there's something great about your school. I know it's hard being in a new situation, but it just takes time to get acclimated. I'm sure things will be ok 🙂. Good luck!

I'm at her school... according to the signature. I must say, MCWs got excellent threads in the Allo Class Thread forum, and the people are generally pretty cool. I chose to come here over my state school (UH JABSOM). The one thing I regret about that is I HATE COLD!!!! The midwest isn't that great either... it's cold with no mountains. I think the school itself is great.

I agree with Ashers that you should check out your class thread -- you MCW people are super-talkative. Also, it'll get better over time. I suspect you'll find things to do in Milwaukee that you like, and you'll meet people who you click with eventually.

The good/bad news is that medical school sucks wherever you are. You might actually be feeling the same way had you picked another school.

Things will change and eventually you'll meet people you like. But the first few months can be really though. Try to go to more parties or the time being.

Also you need to update your "Status:" to "Medical Student".

Well, i guess all you can do is remind yourself why you made that selection to begin with. I know it is easy to focus on the negatives and forget to be greatful for what you have (not that I am saying your ingreatful, just in general). Milwaukee is an okay city (went to undergrad there), and with time you'll adapt better. Try to make friends at school, and MAKE them your support system. You will most likely find many others who are more or less in the same boat as you (no friends or family around) and these are the students that you want to capitalize on.

As for doing peds in MN, do they take the majority of their doctors from the MN schools? I thought hospitals liked medical graduates with different school backgrounds to enhance their experience.

My case seems similar yet opposite...I'm in a med school several states away from my home state. Before med school started, I was worried about leaving my friends and family. But now I'm happy I'm here because with the insane volume of work, I don't see how I would have gotten anything meaningful done. But that's not to say that I don't miss them but the distance has definitely helped me keep the distractions to a minimum.

that depends on the school. In my school clicks formed like the 1st 3 months of school and so did most friendships. If you havn't made friends in the 1st few months its hard to do so later when the coursework gets even more intense and you have even less time to socialize.

I'm also at MCW, and if the OP wants to send me a PM, I'd be okay with that. I agree with a lot of the previous posters - if you don't have a group of friends by now, you're going to have a hard time making lots of friends. You can change that, but it's not as easy as it was when school started. You can always go to more social functions that are open invitation, and hope that people will invite you to their events as well. At least in my class, there are always notices going out on Facebook for different birthday parties or whatever. If I wanted a more active social calendar with my classmates, I could certainly do that.

Some parts of Milwaukee definitely suck, but I don't really think there is much that you can't do here. There are museums, festivals, concerts, fairs, sporting events, lots of volunteer opportunities, a baseball team that actually had a winning record, and more bars than you can shake a stick at. 😛 If you go to church (or would like to), then that's one good place to meet people with similar interests that aren't in med school. My wife and I are part of a small group with other married couples from our church, and that's always fun.

I took her and another M1 out for custard last night. 😀 (Custard = best thing about WI)

I think one of the best things about my M1 year was meeting M3s and M4s because they gave a different perspective, AND they're not doing exactly the same thing as everyone else. (even though she didn't really like me saying "Med school stays hard, but it gets better.")
