That every single vet gets disability now makes me sick. And honestly makes me respect modern veterans far far less than 20th century vets.
We previously had an early 50s military trained spine surgeon in our practice. It came out one day to me that he was given 100% disability as he finished his 20 years. Yet he still did 5 mile hikes, skied black diamond, and did 8 hr OR days.
Can baron, epidural guy, or other previous military personnel comment on how everyone gets disability in the military these days?
Who grants all the disability?
Why does the government not try to limit the amount of disability given?
I agree with cowboydoc that all of this disability BS dramatically increases the DOD budget beyond what they state to congress, and wastes hundreds of millions of dollars.
Meanwhile, Tricare pays less than Medicaid and we’re expected to smile and be grateful to see Tricare patients, instead of those who actually make a profit for our practice.
Well, I am sure it is a complicated story -
BUT - the VA farms out the job of that disability evaluation to community. These PCM's get paid to do the evaluation...and I suspect, they think they are helping the vets out a lot to pad the "application". They are doing you a favor. How nice of them. But it is bankrupting the system.
Also, there are lawyer shops that will look at your file and work with you to get it up as high as possible. I don't know how they do it, but I know several people that have gone to them to try and get the sweet "100%"
Let me give you an example of the evaluation. I had in my chart a single visit to the doctor for back pain once when I was active duty. We got an x-ray, and that was it. I never complained about it again. I never missed work. I was totally honest during the disability evaluation. However, when she did the physical exam, she asked me to bend over - and because I am extremely unflexible, I can really only go to about 60 deg (no making fun of me...), and she was like - oh WOW. I can see you are injured - or something like that.
Anyway, my first year out I sent a letter to the VA and told them not to send me any money. They promptly ignored it and started sending checks.
Of course, now, I use them to pay for my Tesla - so no way I am giving them back now.
I owe the VA about $4,500 now because you aren't supposed to get paid for Reserve pay and disability pay on the same day - and they don't figure that out until years later when they send you a nasty letter saying "HEY. YOU WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO DO THAT!"
