Wtf?!

Hmm... Well it sounds like this adcom does not call around for the references. Does any??? 😕

I know this guy who spent all last summer on an awesome vacation and then when he applied to dental school, he lied and said he had actually shadowed a few dentists. What pisses me off is that we have the same scores and he gets in and i dont. WTF?!

His good ethics and character will carry him far in life! 🙄 Sorry about that for you though.

yea man there's always douches like that. i know exactly how you feel. you just gotta understand that once they do become dentists, they will continue to be dishonest and probably do insurance fraud, which will come back to bite them in the ass later on.

You'll be laughing at him when it catches up to him. The worst that can happen to you is getting in a year or two late.

I know how you feel my friend. Things like that happen to me too. Some people have it easy and they get away with that. I always get caught even if I tried to do something like that (not that I would). Just keep your head up and hope for the best. There is still time. Dont get too frustrated, I know its easier said than done. But try not to. This is an ethical and moral dilemma, what a dirt bag that he did that...and on top of that he had the guts to tell you? This sucks. Remember what goes around comes around.

Sorry there buddy, unfortunately, that does happen....although it may seem to you that you got the shorter end of the stick by being honest, don't worry....I agree....What goes around comes around....and you will be the one prevailing

I think there is a big difference between insurance fraud and saying you shadowed a few dentists.

OP: Did you shadow any dentists? If you did, then i think there is more to his acceptance than just lying about shadowing.

That makes me mad too! These are the people that probably end up in sticky situations like found at SIU's dental school last year in their cheating scandal.

Realistically, he'll probably get away with it and plenty more forever. Unfortunately.

I've never bought the "cheaters never prosper" or "they'll get theirs" BS. Frankly, I see that as a result of being fed religious jargon about salvation for those that are morally upright and damnation for those who aren't.

There will ALWAYS be someone who "slid through the cracks" like there are people who smoked all their lives and never got lung cancer and those who never touched a cigarette and died at some relatively early age. It's just life.

The thing is lying increases your probability of getting caught in a lie - speeding increases your odds of getting a ticket, bombarding your body with carcinogens increases the probability of mutation and subsequent cancer.

That's a gamble, a chance. Not that they will but that they are relatively more likely and the consequences are stiff. Do what you think is right because you value honesty and want your choices to reflect the person you are.

Specifically, to the OP: One shadowing gig doesn't make or break an applicant. Perhaps an honest assessment of your application is in need.

well, even though he gets away with it now...sooner or later it will catch up to him and bite him in the a$$...that's just life....unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about it....just look at the news, ppl who escape from jail, kill others, aren't caught...then like 20, 30 yrs later...grandpa is in jail....but what can we do... just stay honest and do your best...at the end of the day, you are the only one accountable for your actions...

I'd hardly associate his acceptance solely with his LOR's from his dentists. There are so many variables you have yet to list. Interview performance, personal statement, and extracurriculars to name a few. I'm not condoning someone lying on their app. I've seen many of my friends with LOWER scores than me get accepted. Hardly fair, but then again, it's not worth getting riled up about. Karma will definitely catch up with him though. Don't you worry about that. You'll get into a better school too. :luck:

But then again, he could have lied in his personal statement, about his extracurriculars, throughout his entire interview, and possibly even had a friend in high places who told him that he would basically sign a letter that he wrote for himself.... Dont tell me that you cant lie through all of those.

Guys . . . . get used to the lying in the real world. Right now I am working in the field of scientific research, and I can't tell you how often I have suspected and pretty much know for sure when a colleague fabricated his/her data to get a paper published. I had a colleague one time in my lab when I was a graduate student, and she was of the type to exploit others and/or ride on their coattails. She tried to get others to write her qualifying proposals for her, help her directly with her research by doing her experiments, and in the end I am almost certain fabricated her way to graduation with four papers. So to the OP, this won't be the last time you will see a colleague doing something dirty to get what they want.

What can you do about it? Realistically, not much, unless you have direct proof and is willing to make a direct stand against him by going to the authority. Otherwise, I'd say just relax, keep your own moral standard, and believe me in the end things will even out. You see, when people get away with cheating they get emboldened by it, and eventually they will resort to it more and more often to the point where they can no longer conceal it. So take it easy, and enjoy the long show known as Life.

Shunwei.... in all of the posts you make on this site you always take the moral high road. You never take sides but always put both sides out there for everyone to understand what is going on. All of the posts you make are always intelligent and well thought out. You should go into Philos of something..lol... you can not use these great lifes roadmaps for future patients..hahha.. a waste of intelligence........jk

again, the important word here is **could**...we don't know and cannot jump to conclusions without all the facts since, again, we don't know the whole story....plus, in the future, if he is caught lying etc, he can be kicked out of school....

Haha, and I just got excited because I thought of Leonardo DiCaprio. 😀

It would be next to impossible for schools to do background checks or check the references on every applicant. However, there was one student at our school who listed hours of activity in our predent club, and the club's record of their activities was greatly different. They were rejected from a school immediately once the disparity was noted. (The school talked with our club's advisor)
