Hi all - I am new to SDN and have recently been reading some of the newest topics...everyone seems so helpful all the time - so I figured I'd confide in you all during this stressful time. I have been excepted to WVSOM already, turned down a few interviews elsewhere (low on $) and am scheduled to interview at TUCOM later this month. I have not bought a plane ticket yet on the account that I have to pay a deposit to wvsom ($2000) next week. I will be paying the deposit for sure, but I am not positive about going on the tucom interview...I don't know a whole lot about it, but I do know that I would like the location better (near family, sf, etc.) Some of the recent posts regarding tucom also suggest that the chances of getting in with a late jan. interview are slim. I would be happy at wvsom, however, it may not be the best for me and my fiance as she just finished a degree in public health and will want to work to help out. There aren't very many jobs in lewisburg, wv...so she would probably get a masters online. If we went to tucom, she has a much better chance of gettting a job in her field. These are my concerns right now...Any advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated and I do thank you greatly in advance.

did you check out rotation sites/residency matchlists, etc. Also, I believe wvsom emphasizes rural PC much more than does touro. won't hurt to go on interview

WVSOM, hands down. No reasons needed, thats just the way it is.

WVSOM fo shizzle. Great school. Good luck! 👍

It depends. Do you want to do your residency in rural West Virginia or California?

I am thinking of pursuing something subsurgical, so I guess rotations in CA would be nicer. JBONE and CANUCK99, care to elaborate as to why WVSOM hands down? I am very interested in your opinions as this decisions seems more stressful than before i was accepted. THanks for anyone else who has any more input.

do you mean rotations or residency??? would i not be able to match in california or west coast for that matter if I went to wvsom??

You can pretty much go anywhere for residency if you do well on your boards and rotations. It also helps to rotate at the site you plan to do residency at. Therefore, you could go to either school and obtain the same residency given the above.

I am very happy with WVSOM. The people here are down-to-earth and good to be around. The faculty are pretty helpful also. L-Town isn't the most exciting place to live in compared to California, but you have everything you need here (well....minus a Best Buy! )

Where is the Touro love?????

I interviewed at both places and liked both, but.... WVSOM - beautiful campus, PBL option, remote location, more $$ than Touro (not that it matters if you love where you are), and from what it sounds like... less options for your better half. The last part is important because she is your support system😉

Touro - great location, less $$ (if that matters), great clinical rotation options (not saying WVSOM's are bad), on campus with students from other areas of study (I think this is a bonus) and I am going there!

I know I sound diplomatic, but that is just it - visit and go with your gut!

I am not sure if you an out-of-stater when it comes to WVSOM or not, but that is what turned me off from going there after I was accepted. 70+ grand is far too much, no matter the amount of money I may make upon graduating. That, for me, was the biggest turn off when it came to WVSOM.

hey, thanks all for your opinions, they are very helpful. Does anyone know what the differences in cost-of-living is b/w the two areas (L-berg and say...Vallejo and surrounding areas)??? Also, for those who flew into TUCOM for an interview, did you rent a car?? thanks a bunch!

I don't know how much this can be trusted, but, the woman at WVSOM stated that WV has a MUCH lower cost of living than CA. The reason she went into this was due to another applicant in our group who was from CA and was very curious as to the costs (esp. when one consideres the 70+ grand price tag 😱 ). The girl from CA stated that an apartment there could cost 800+ a month while in WV it was around 500. Again, this is from the WVSOM admissions staff so, please take it with a grain of salt!

the cost of tuition at WVSOM is not 70K. the cost is actually around 42K. The rest comes from the amount given for living expenses etc etc, if you so choose to take that much. does any student really need 30 grand to live?

Canuck brings up a good point. Because I didn't spend much last semeser in extra things I dont need loan money this semester aside from what was taken out for tuition.
They factor in a whole lot more for cost of living than what is necessary.
I must say I was diapointed to find out that distilled water is 4 cents more here than in Texas in Walmart.

I am an SBL at WVSOM and I love it here, and demand you go here 'cause this school kicks ass

...however, go to the interview at Touro. Keep all your options open. Sell plasma or rob a convenience store or something.

I am just curious, can you give me a student's opinion why you like WVSOM? What stands out the most?
I have an interview at WVSOM and I would like to get the sense of the school other than getting the info from the school's web site.... Thanks

The faculty set this school apart from any other I've seen. They are always available for anything, give you all the resources you could ever want, and can be reached 24/7 if you need to. The anatomy staff especially will spend hours in the lab answering any questions you have. We just got two extra anatomy teachers, Dr.s Ward and Sandford, who are young and excited to be teaching you. It makes a difference when its clear that the faculty wouldn't be anywhere else but in the lab when you need them.

Another great point is the spirit of the class. I'd be hard pressed to call anyone a gunner in our entire class. When one person makes a study guide, it is almost always e-mailed to all. The 2nd years also made us a CD that found every old test available back until 1998.

I am enjoying my education more than I have enjoyed anything other schooling I have ever received.

Third: Brasky is ranked 8th in the AP College Football poll.

Second: To Bill Brasky.

Together: Bill Brasky! "

i experienced this from the interview alone, so i can only imagine how it must be as a student.

Hi Mazimi,
I'm a first year at TUCOM. I don't post on SDN often, but I'm trying not to study. I gotta say, I loved my interview at TUCOM the most last year. They really dig into your application and ask you questions based off that. I was asked about a health administration class I took, which I thought was pretty awesome that they picked out that small detail. Anyways, what threw me off was that TUCOM does group interviews. Was very freaked out when I first found out about it, because I always hated those at UCD. But this was the best group interview ever, and it was very encouraging to see what the other interviewers were like. I think I got lucky too, because 4/5 are currently my classmates. Anyways, good luck!
