WVSOM Interview and Transportation

So I have an inteview for WVSOM on September 5th. I am wondering for those have interviewed there or will be interviewing there, how they were able to get their transportation to the school and to the airport? Some of the hotels don't offer shuttle services to the school, and I am not too keen on renting a car. Please let me know what others have done and what others plan to do. Thanks!

Hi susan, I am also interviewing on the 5th and had trouble finding transportation from the airport in Lewisburg to the hotel, to the school, and finally back to the airport. I had to rent a car, being that Im a male and 22 yrs old I had to pay the higher rates, but there is a hertz at the airport. My advice would be to rent a car because in a small town I wouldnt count on a cab service, so your best bet to get to the school on time is to rent a car. on the interview. if you can rent a car I would do so...but I don't drive....I know you can laugh now...but I am fom NYC and never learned...in any event... I am staying at a hotel with an airport shuttle service (free) then I am hiring a car service to take me to the school and pick me up🙂... its quite pricey though like 118$ total for the car service...so if you can rent a car I would just do that it would save you money in the end🙂

You're definitely in for a culture shock! However, I think you'll find the town (overall) more welcoming of strangers than you might expect given the WV stereotypes.

As for the OP, I drove to my interview since I was living in North Carolina at the time so I didn't face your dilemma. I would suggest calling the Admissions office and asking what they would recommend. They might offer you a ride, or perhaps help you get a discount on a rental, etc. Sarah's very nice.

I'd be curious to hear how they respond. As an alumni, I would hope that we're trying to extend a welcoming hand.

I know I am in for a huuuuuge culture shock.... but I went to school in upstate NY....so i am atleast a little prepared... however everyone from my college was either from NYC or Long Island...it took me some time but I actually like small towns...I have some things i am worried about...but i will just have to see when i get there....i am looking forward to it though🙂

InductionAgent, do you happen to have any tips for having a successful interview at WVSOM? It is sincerely my first choice from all the wonderful things I have heard and read about. Tell me anything and everything about your experience and how I myself can shine.

The same generic advice for interviewing at any DO program - look at the website, find some things about WVSOM that you genuinely like (for example, there is a weekly OMM clinic the last 2 months of 2nd year which provides excellent preparation for 3rd-year rotations). Have a good answer for what interests you about osteopathic medicine.

Remember that the mission of WVSOM is to provide primary care physicians for rural West Virginia. Don't lie, but if you are planning on being (for example) a plastic surgeon in Seattle, remind yourself that sometimes your plans change, and maybe you will have such a great experience doing family practice clinical rotations in rural WV that you will realize that has been your purpose all along.

As for myself, I am going to be an anesthesiologist, most likely in an urban area in south Texas. But I had no idea this would be my specialty or location when I interviewed at WVSOM six and a half years ago.

Remember that everyone can potentially be evaluating you. When I was a WVSOM student, I was honest with interviewees I took to lunch that I would be filling out an evaluation. If anyone tells you different, don't believe them. Many people you encounter will not evaluate you, but if you really piss them off, they may say something.
