WVSOM Interview
Started by bunnybear
When were you guys processed?
My initial date was July 7th (and then revised again on 15th), and I just called them, and they STILL haven't gotten my application from AACOMAS.
Is there anyone else who was processed early who has yet to receive the WVSOM email with pin #, etc??

Hi, I go to WVSOM.
The interview is pretty friendly. But some times they deliberately do odd things to throw you off guard. Like all the people interviewing you will be nicely dressed with shirt and tie...but then they'll have one of the professors doing the interview wear a cowboy hat
I know the professor that does that. He is a cool dude.
Try to relax and answer all their questions to the best of your ability.
Thanks a lot, can you give some info since you are a student there?CatsandCradles said:Hi, I go to WVSOM.

How's the life style?
Can you do research?
Do people get their first choice residency?
How are the professors?
Hows the clinical eductation?
How do people do on the boards (both DO and MD boards)
To be fair I dont think I've ever seen him without the cowboy hat and boots.CatsandCradles said:Like all the people interviewing you will be nicely dressed with shirt and tie...but then they'll have one of the professors doing the interview wear a cowboy hat![]()

He is very cool.
I have an interview on 9/8 as well!
I've been reading alot about WVSOM and it sounds like a great school with very nice people. However I am concerned about the tuition for out of staters and specialty residencies since WVSOM is mostly PC rural. I don't really know what I want to do in medicine, but at the same time I wouldn't want to limit my possibilities. But overall, this school sounds fantastic.
I do wonder about their new policy about acceptances w/o interviews if the applicant has >3.5GPA and >28.

Sounds kinda bad on their part for being so number oriented. I wonder about the matching list as well, I don't want to limit myself either?!timmah2k said:I have an interview on 9/8 as well!

I think that's pretty good, what do you think? Btw where are you from?
Since we have our interview together, lets exchange info on pm so we can help each other about the airports and cheap hotels and tickets?? (if you are down)

I havent heard a thing from then either, think I was complete 7/28.
Same here, complete on 7/25.

I was complete on 6/26 and only heard from them yesterday. Maybe a week more and they'll get more pins out.
For those of you granted interviews...I got my email today with my pin and password, and when I went to check my status, it said I had been granted an interview on 9/18. I have not gotten an email though from them saying I was granted an interview. Is your interview date listed at the bottom of status page?

My interview date is listed there too. You should get another email inviting you for an interview.
heyimnick said:Well, my status now says "decision deferred", so that must mean I'm not regarded as a competitive applicant. I guess I'll have to wait and see whether they grant me one or not.
My status check revealed the same thing about mine, it says "decision deferred"......what does that mean for WVSOM?

I just checked my status on the WVSOM applicant page, and it looks like the secondary is up for me to complete when I can.
When should I be expecting an e-mail invite? Do I have to send in my secondary first?
Also, under the status, it reads: "Accept- Early Admission". What does that mean!? Do yours' say that, too?

Looks like I need to make a phone call! 👍

Interesting...

First, I don't believe that is the entire matchlist.
Also, I know a 2006 graduate that is starting her Anesthesiology residency at Penn State right now, so I don't believe WV graduates are pigeon-holed in any way.

that list was from 2005 if I'm not mistaken and it actually looks quite robust. Everything from plastics to diag. Rad. Very cool 😎
aacomas sent out my application on 8/5/06, and i got about 6 secondaries from other schools so far.. but when i called wvsom they said they hadn't gotten my primary yet...not in their database. I guess from the sound of it, it takes longer for wvsom? so i guess i'll keep waiting for an email with pin/etc.. and then who knows. good luck to the rest of you waiting too 🙂

I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.
1) So far my life has been one where I stay up till 1 AM each night studying. I am worried a lot about Biochem and Gross. The Gross Anatomy here is very very impressive....and that's why I'm worried about it because I fear its going to be very hard...Biochem, I am finally getting to understand pKa and that sort of stuff.
If you didn't take biochem in undergrad, you might have it pretty tough. The lecture today really put some people in for a spin. We did Hb-S today. You know how the valine gets placed in at the 6th position of glutamate on the beta chain, and since valine is nonpolar...well you get serious problems with hemoglobin. If I hadn't had biochem, I'd be in trouble.
Right now I eat a lot of junk food like chicken patties and frozen vegetables etc. I know it stinks, but I don't have too much time - though we do get long lunch times.
Today I sat out at the rocking chairs and calmed my mind. The weather here was very nice - especailly if you are sitting in the shade.
The people of Lewisburg are proud of this school.
There are nice internet coffee shops here. I am writing this text while drinking an ice latte. Its Friday, so I am going to relax a little.
We have exams every three weeks. WVSOM has just did away with block exams. I heard the second year students had some really difficult exams and they tell me that this new schedule is going to make things even more harder. So I am a concerned.
2) Research. They do some sort of research here. Some of it is wet labs, and such. They had a long list and sent out emails asking for students to do research...but I don't see how anyone will have time to do research since school for the 1st year class is 8AM-5PM on most days. Maybe Megalofyia can say something.
But WVSOM isn't a John Hopkins. So I doubt we have anything like finding that allmight tumor supressor p53 type research.
3) Residency choices...I can't say with any authority because I am a 1st year and I have just started.
4) Professors
Anatomy - VERY VERy good. And I'm scared that they'll have an infomamtion overload and make my blood pressure raise up. Yesterday I was saying the Lord's prayer and all of a sudden I thought of "thoracolumbar fascia." I know...its disturbing. The Gross Lab looks really nice. 4 people to a cadaver and each professor works with 5 tables.
100 of us have Gross and we rotate with another 100 that has OPP. Gross is on Tuesday and Thursday. OPP on Thursday.
Physiology:
One professor is VERY good. The guy really knows how to teach.
But another guy is VERY...well not that helpful. At least that is what I thought.
Biochem:
There are several biochem guys.
The lady teaching right now is hard to understand, but she is really willing to help us. I can't comment on the other professors
OPP:
Pretty good so far. But I have had only 1 class with them.
And there are a lot of other faculty, histology, pharmacology, clinicians, etc etc etc - but I don't know them yet.
5) Clinical Education:
3rd year students do rotations in West Virginia. This is something that those of you from the big city might not like. However on the 4th year you can go anywhere you like.
The school is heavy on primary care. There are a lot of primary care rotations. But again I am only a 1st year that has just started, so I can't comment with authority.
6) Boards
I don't know our school's statistics. But I have heard that the SBL are just above the national average for COMLEX 1. However the PBL folks had trouble and did under the average - that's what the professors told me, they said they're gonna fix PBL, but I am an SBLer so I don't know anything much.
I don't know our USMLE statistics. But I have been here for only 2 weeks and the professors have talked about it already. So I guess they're pushing us to take the USMLE with the COMLEX.
Overall:
Pros:
-Fairly darn good faculty
-Anatomy/Gross labs are very good, the cadavars don't smell at all! I don't know how they did it, but it is impressive. I've been in some city MD/DO schools were the smell was repulsive!
-New lecture halls. They spent a lot of money upgrading. We have these microphones to communicate with the lecture professor. Pretty neat, but I ain't gonna use it cause they scare me.
-OPP department seems very enthusiatic. The OPP lab is very comfortable.
-Library looks good.
-Classmates are very helpful. I was worried that there would be competition, but people are really nice to each other and me.
-Good study spaces. They have nice catacombs.
Cons:
-Housing. Not enough of it around Lewisburg so you might have to drive like 15 mins to school.
-3rd year rotations are done in West Virginia, so if you are one of those folks who want to rotate at big city hospitals then this might be an issue for you.
-Emphasis on primary care, which is something those of you wanting to specialize deeply have got to take into account.
-The out of state cost is very high. 45,000 for me. This is something you have to take into consdieration because that is a lot of money.
-Really long and hard schedule 8AM-5PM.
About half of my class are West Virginia residents. The other half is from Texas, Michigan, and Pennslyvannia. A lot of Southern states. I am a NJ person, so I feel a little bit wierd at times. People are like, "Wow your from NJ" and then they tell jokes about NJ...Everyone makes fun of NJ.
I wish I could comment more, but I have just started here.
I wish you the very best on your interviews

C&C
^Thank you very much Cats!

I just got an interview for october first.... and the 72k a year estimate per year for out of staters is shocking. Anyone know if you can get in-state tuition somehow for years 2-4?

The 72k is an estimate. I think 60k is more realistic, but that's still pretty high. The only way to get instate tuition is by being a WV resident, which means you either live there for 1 yr while not attending school, or marry someone there.
I got an acceptance letter from WVSOM today through snail mail. Funny thing is I didn't even interview???? 😕

If you have 3.5+ GPA and 28+ MCAT, you don't have to interview, they just give you a seat.

...and then they ask for $3,000.00!
