I just wanted to start a thread for people applying to West Virginia University. I couldn't find any other threads for WVU applicants. I have an interview on 12/7. Anyone else?

Just interviewed.

Good luck!

I applied there as well even though I am OOS, because I have family in Clarksburg, and my father is an alumni (but not in medicine).

I'm going for an interview on 11-28. Flying to Morgantown = hilariously expensive (though equal in price to flying into Pitt and renting a car).

Just in case anyone wants to know, I talked to Beth Ann recently - she said that the class is about 25% full and the committee has a full meeting schedule from now until February. Also, is anyone here applying to Marshall? I interview there on Dec. 5th and all the interview feedback on this site is really old.

How much is it going to cost? I think I'm probably just going to drive (about 7 hours from my home though).
Concubine, how did the interview go? Any pointers for the rest of us?

So what does that mean that the committee has a full meeting schedule? Thanks for the info! Good luck to everyone that has interviews coming up.

I'm interviewing there on 1/7. Good luck, everyone! Who here is from Morgantown? (I lived there most of my childhood until high school. Any St. Francis alumni applying? 🙂 )

Probably just means that there shouldn't be too committee breaks during the holidays. BTW Matt, I'm currently an undergrad at WVU.

The flight and hotel rang in at over $600 - fortunately, I'm MD-PhD, so part of the hotel bill is being taken care of.

Holy crap! That is pretty steep. Well, looks like driving will be the cheapest way to go then (for me anyways).

Yeah, if you can swing it, go for it. I went with a pretty cheap hotel, it was the tickets that cost a lot - over $500, and I'm flying in from Hartford.

Wow, flying in to Morgantown? You would have to do it on a small plane, wouldn't you? A kid at my interview did it from California, the flight cost him around $1000. I spent $400 + another $80 on a rental car. The interview went great, I was very impressed. Don't worry, they are very laid back. Review the most common questions on SDN interview feedback, because you will get some of those. The rest will just be personal questions...a piece of cake. Good luck!

How've you liked Morgantown, vector? Are you from the area initially?

See, that makes sense. Unfortunately, I'm flying in from the Northeast, so there's virtually no savings (well, when I priced it out you could save a whole $10 or so).

Take home message: far away from Morgantown, fly to Pitt and drive. Relatively in the region of West Virginia, it doesn't really matter...

i'm interviewing in mid december. does anyone have recommendations on where to stay?

I'm going to try and stay with a host from the MedStay program. Had you thought about doing that?

The Residence Inn Marriott is by far the closest hotel to the med school (you can see the school from the hotel), but it's also probably the priciest option as well....

Matt: I've really liked Morgantown thus far - I'm not initially from here but I'm a WV native. The traffic gets pretty bad during the school year but if you leave a half hour before you have class you'll probably be on time coming from pretty much anywhere in the area. Housing near the med school is ridiculously abundant and well priced if you shop around. The night life is great and there are a ton of bars and restaurants. Parts of Morgantown (particularly the downtown area near the main campus) are pretty filthy but the med school campus is near the Evansdale campus which is much cleaner. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I interviewed there on October 1 and am currently waitlisted :/

I'm not sure I understand. 28O MCAT with 3.75 overall and 3.55 BCPM. Plenty of extracurriculars, medical and science related + just random other stuff I like to do. On top of that, I interviewed so early, I figured I'd have an advantage in the rolling admissions.

Pretty disappointing. Hopefully I'll get accepted.

are you a WV resident?

Didn't they say that everyone gets waitlisted at first, and then they slowly take people off the waitlist? That is the way they made it sound in my interview and that the admissions committee doesn't usually begin to really review the students and make offers until long breaks such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I am a West Virginia resident.

I didn't hear anything about "everyone being waitlisted at first." I emailed Beth Ann and she said a letter had been sent to my house on Nov 9, though I never received it (we've been having trouble with our mail). So if everyone was waitlisted at first, I doubt they'd actually send out waitlisting letters. It'd just be an internal thing, I would think.

However, I recently emailed her and asked what their policy is on waitlisting and if there is anything I can do (letter of intent, etc) to help.

I got my response from Beth Ann and she said that they have no real policy on waitlisted students -- you just have to wait and see, obviously. She said I could have more letters sent on my behalf, but I don't really have any potential stellar letter-writers since I used them all for my original letters of recommendation.

She said she hoped they'd have some responses sent out soon.

So I guess I'll just have to wait it out!

hey guys...i remember they said that most of the time, people are put on the waitlist b/c they only fill up half the class before december and want to leave a lot of seats open

anyway...when did most people hear after their interview b/c i interviewed 4 weeks ago and still nothing..

Like I said, it took me from Oct 1 until Nov 9 (even though I didn't receive the letter, that's when they sent it out, apparently).

They're awfully slow, it'd seem, and Beth Ann said that they're especially slow this year. I hope they're speedy about figuring out who gets accepted off the waitlist, though. :X

I also interviewed about a month ago. I emailed Beth Ann, and she said they would be sending out letters before Christmas break (which I think is around Dec 14th for WVU).

what is the closest ski resort to WVU? and how is it?

haha i know this is only tangential but just wanted to know if i could get some skiing in before/after my interview. thanks.

i'm interviewing 12/19, so winter break probably doesn't start until at least 12/20.

I've got a friend who attends there right now and she said she had 2 finals Thursday (12/13) and then she was done. They may continue admissions stuff over the break.

Or I guess it'd seem they'd have to, since they have you scheduled for an interview on the 19th 😛

Hey, I just received an invite for WVU. I think I am interviewing in January, but I still have to schedule it

I'm a student at WVU and finals are done tm, but I also have an interview tm morning at 7:45! 😀

Congratulations!! Now you can just relax and have a good Christmas break! WTG!

To anyone who has received an acceptance... how long afterwards did it take to receive the invoice?

Hey, because I was admitted by one of my state schools, I went ahead and canceled my interview with West Virginia as well as with Creighton. I felt like it was an honor to be invited, but I am very happy with the results I have already, plus I am OOS. Good Luck, to applicants still waiting to get a letter in the mail.

AHhhh!!! I just found out I was put on the waitlist/alternate list for WVU. They said they were "favorably impressed" with my application, and to not give up hope. This is frustrating! Does anyone have any insight in to how many people get off this list? Anyone else in the same situation?

I am interviewing there this Monday the 7th. Anyone else interviewing then? I'd love to meet up on Sunday night if anyone's interested.

Thanks

I got what seems to be the exact same letter a few days ago. Hopefully we won't have to wait long to find out their final decision..:luck:

Hi, guys!

I have my interview Jan 09, 2008. 😀

Few questions here:

1) I wrote to MedStay back in November. My interview is in a few days and still there is no response. Did anyone else here applied?

2) I am OOS applicant from NY. Actually, I immigrated to the US few years ago. I do not have much of ties to West Virginia state or WVU. Do you know if that is going to affect my chances? I really like the school.

3) Any updates on the date when the commission will meet?

Regarding transportation, I bought a ticket to Pittsburgh, PA and rented a zip car from there. Check out zipcar.com 👍 - it is way cheaper than a regular rental car, especially if you're under 25.

I am in the same boat. I hope I freed up a spot for one of you all.

By the way, what are the requirements for WV residency talking about fin. aid?
Say, I am NY state resident. From the second year will I start paying as in-state resident?

anyone?

I was accepted in late September to WVU. I was raised in Morgantown so it was an easy decision... I hope to see a lot of you in August!

Guys, forget about Question #1:

Hi, guys!

1) I wrote to MedStay back in November. My interview is in a few days and still there is no response. Did anyone else here applied?

One student called me and we arranged everything. 🙂 Seems to be a great program. Recommended!

Wondering the same thing. I think it might be a bit more difficult to become a resident, but it would be nice to hear it from someone that knows first hand. When I interviewed, I asked some of the medical students, but they were all instate and didn't know.

Anything hear anything post hold?
