Hi there, I'm applying to WVU SoD (application process of 2012) and submitted my application in July.
Has anyone already recieved secondary application from them? Does anyone know if they started sending out secondary?
I have called them several times (last on Sept 8), and they keep saying to keep checking email.
Will appreciate any answers!
Thanks.

I received the secondary on Wednesday 9/7. I am OOS. It is a very simple application that only has biographical type of questions. There were no "Why WVU" type of questions.

By the way, when I received the e-mail it had a link where you open the application, which is a PDF, and you fill it out then print and mail it to them with $50 for application fee.

Best of luck.....

Hi jmc2012,
Do you mind if I ask what were your scores and GPA?
When did they get your initial application?
Good luck to you too.
Thanks.

My scores are 20/20/22 aa/bcp/pat. Overall GPA is 3.61 and science GPA is 3.54. My initial application was sent on 7/4. Hope that helps....

Thank you jmc2012,

My scores are lower AA 19, PAT 20, but GPA 4.0. I was just wondering about my chances.

I'm guessing from your sig that you are from WV? If so, that's a huge start. WVU's ad com doesn't really start getting together with everyone in the same room 'til the beginning of the semester, so don't panic for a while yet. How are your ECs? Did you do Destination Dentistry?
Good Luck

Hi yellowjeeep79,

Thanks for the reply. I am from WV and honestly only applied to WVU, no other schools. I live in Morgantown. Unfortunately I did not do Destination Dentistry as it was on April 16th, and on April 17th I gave birth to my baby girl, so couldn't make it.
I am new here on forum, what's ECs?
Thanks a lot.

EC = Extracurricular activities; ie volunteering, shadowing, etc.

By the way, I think you will be fine according to the ADEA guide your stats are well within the limits of WV norm. Actually they are higher than the average scores. It's early yet.

Best of luck.....🙂

Thanks jmc2012,

I do have volunteering around 200 hours, but it was done in another country. I came to US 5 years ago, and I am a legal resident (have green card), next year I will be a citizen. I've lived in WV all this time with my family. As far as I understand I am considered WV resident. I did not volunteer here in US though. I always studied and worked at the same time, full time or part time.
What sucks is that they do not transfer or even consider any foreign credits, because I have Bachelors/Masters degree in Engineering earned in another country, so when I came here to US I took all pre-reqs and credit hours from scratch again, but I took minimum they (WVU SoD) require (this I consider my weakest point). Also the research I have done was in another country when I was getting engineering degree.
At this point I do start to worry because school didn't send the secondary app yet.

Just have confidence in yourself and know that you are a well qualified individual. Hold your head high!

If you don't hear anything in a few weeks then I'd give them a call, or stop by since you are in the area, and inquire about your status. Also, since you mentioned that you have a green card, is English your native language? I imagine so as your conversations on here are spot-on. Nevertheless, some schools have policies regarding ESL.

WVU's ad com (admissions committee) is headed by Dr Sheila Price, a truly nice lady and VERY keen on diversity. You should do fine if you get an interview, and last cycle 72 people applied from the state of WV and 71 got interviews!

English is not my native language. But I have lived in England (UK) for 4 years and now here in US for 5 years. My application does show that I have completed pre-reqs here in US, including science courses, business courses, English, and others. They all in English. My GPA 4.0, so I think it should be obvious that I can speak and write in English to a rather good level. My husband often says that I speak it better than he does, and he was born here 😳)
Plus, on WVU SoD website I couldn't find anything about English not being native language, and whenever I called the school, they asked me about what kind of courses I took, taking, or will take. For sure they heard my accent but never mentioned anything.
And if I remember correctly, there is no question about native language in main application, only about any additional languages I can speak. So hopefully I'll be fine. But I will check it with the school just in case too. Thank you for mentioning it though.

Also, thank you guys for the encouragement and all your advice here.

There is a woman in her fourth year of dental school who spoke little or no English when her family moved to the states (Georgia, I think). She took some kind of English as a second language course, but when she applied to UGA sod, where she did her undergrad work, they gave her a hard time about the language. WVU gave her no such problems.

So, as I understood from your reply, that woman is studying in WVU right now. Is that right? Do you happen to know her first or last name?
I wasn't taking my pre-reqs in WVU, but everyone who was studying there told me that WVU is very diverse and that they do like it (diversity).

Also, you asked me in your previous reply about Destination Dentistry, if I went there this year. Do you think participating in it increases chances of being accepted? Or does it just gives more information about the school, faculty, students, and program?

The woman I was speaking about is a fourth year dental student. I would not feel comfortable revealing her name on this forum.
Destination Dentistry is a great way to gain additional information about the school. The reason I asked you about it was to establish whether or not you got to meet Dr Price.

I have not received my secondary app from WVU either. Are they the type of school that will not reject you, but keep you in the pool until the end of the process.. without actually giving you an interview? Does anyone know?

Did anyone else recieve secondary already from WVU SoD?
