I know they are very picky about people from out of state. I've heard of a few people going up for interviews since I had mine in September, but I'm not sure whats going on now.

Last year the avg GPA was around 3.4, and the DAT was 17 I think. From what I've heard, all of the out of state students they accepted last year had very high marks.

Are you out of state? 17 avg doesn't seem that high for a "high" out of state mark....

Thanks for the info. I guess since they only accept 19 out of state they must be pretty picky.... But I love west virginia!! I guess I'll just have to wait and see.... It seems like most ppl might avoid applying due to getting abunch of different rec's plus taking 2 semsters english classes and weird req. like that...

When I applied 2 years ago I was offered an interview in January as an out-of-stater (from Texas). My stats were 18/18/15 -- 3.91 sGPA, 3.83 cumGPA

I think you probably stand a good chance of being offered an interview, even if it's after December 1st.

Hey thanks for the encouragement! I do hope I get one! I am just worried about all of this Dec 1st business since I submitted late and probably wont' get any interviews before then....🙄

Yea I'm from WV.

The average of all 51 accepted was 17DAT & 3.5GPA. I have a few friends that are attending there now, and they have all told me that the out of state students had high GPA/DAT scores. I'm just guessing that if 17/3.5 is the average, then there are probably quite a few instate students well under that to compensate for the out of state students that have a 20+DAT and 3.9+GPA. I've just always heard from many people that WVU prefers instate students from rural areas.

Like you said, 19 were out of state, but 9 of them had "ties to WV" so that just leaves 10 out of state spots really. Last year they interviewed around 150, and 82 of them were in state (out of 1400+ total applicants).

Here is some facts/figures for you:

Makes me feel good that 4 are from Ohio, I guess?
🙂

Edit: Ohio County in WV.... ah! haha... smart me

haha I would imagine so. Where in Ohio are you from? I live just across the Ohio river from Proctorville.

I'm sure none of you can answer this, but why do they have to deviate from the norm and require 3 "different" sciences LORs and one has to be from physics, right?

I just have two sciences and one from dentist, which is what is required by majority of dental schools.

I'm from cleveland suburbs. 🙂 I haven ever heard of Proctorville

Probably because they want to weed out applicants?? Not really sure... but it was a b**** to get those 3 for me!! Well physics and chem since I took those freshman year. I just got one from my biochem prof this semester for chem because i am doing really well in the class and he agreed to it. I feel your pain though

I applied to that school before looking at their requirements!

From their website, they have renovated a lot of their facilities and they look really nice.

So do I even stand a chance for an interview being out of state? I live in AZ Cum GPA, 3.42 Sci GPA, 3.3 DAT 19

I toured the school during the summer. It was hard to find as a first time visitor.

I guess you have a chance... but accepting 19 out of over 1000 applicants is a small chance 🙁🙁🙁

I feel your pain.

They only required me to have one LOR from the sciences. They wanted my other two to come from faculty from the dental hygiene program I graduated from.

On a side note, I don't think WVU sends out acceptance letters on Dec 1st. When I was there, they told me they would send out requests for a background check if they were still interested. They wouldn't say if that was a guarantee acceptance tho.

Well it's good that you have a really good chance to get in!! Is this the only school you applied to?

I hope they don't give out Dec 1st, I don't even have an interview yet!! 🙄

Yea since I'm only a Junior towards my biology degree I only applied to WVU. It's where I really want to go, but if I don't get in this cycle, I'll probably apply to more schools next year when I'm a senior.

So should I contact the school and ask them about my situation? I have a feeling that they will simply tell me to go find some LOR as they require.

I think they want a bio, chem, physics if you are a science major. otherwise, they will accept once science and two from your major...... but i know they are really strict on this policy. Are you a science major?

It never hurts to call and ask. Besides, they are really nice and helpful over the phone. They are a little slow over email tho (2-3 days for a response)

Yes, I am a science major (biology). They mailed me their secondary application and cashed my $40 check as well, which I sent back with the secondary. Maybe they did all of that before going through my letters?

Yea I'm sure that's exactly what happened. At the time of my interview they had only received 1 of my LORs so I know they don't look at them until afterwards.

Really ? They said they wouldn't review my app till everything was in. RealDeal, did you interview? I heard that secondary pretty much means interview at WVU, but I'm not sure. I'm hoping they review me... they just got all my stuff in so I guess I should hear soon if they want me at all.

Maybe they are more lax on in-state students? From that link you gave me it seems like not many in state students apply so they probably just interview all of you and then pick from the bunch. My thoughts anyway.... I dunno though.
