Baltimore is a **** city lol. I'm from there and loved Philly when I went to visit

Why don't you like Baltimore? Doesn't Baltimore have an awesome National Aquarium, etc?

I don't like it either. I only applied to MD to avoid problems with my sister who lives in MD.
Like, if I didn't apply she would think that I don't want to live with her or so... However, I wouldn't like to live there. So, it didn't hurt me at all when they asked for new scores before considering me.
(I've been there 5 times. Each time for more than 2 weeks)

Hahaha that is very diplomatic of you.

I see- why wouldn't you like to live there? Not a fan of the city in general? Is it a safety concern?

Hi everyone! I'm really sorry for this "this school" vs "that school" thread, I just really needed some recent information I couldn't find anywhere else.

I was accepted to two of my top choice dental schools this past week and couldn't be more excited, but I'm having a bit of trouble deciding which one I'd really like to go to. Here are my main concerns:

The money will end up being very similar, so that's not a major issue.

I very much hope to specialize in orthodontics. I know it's early to take that decision, but that is what I've wanted for most of my life, and it is my favorite speciality out of all I've shadowed, as I really enjoy working with children and young adults. I'd like to go to the school that would better prepare me for specializing.

Temple is Pass/Fail whereas Maryland has standard grading. I am a bit concerned that standard grading may cause life at Maryland to be a bit more stressful than it needs to be, and P/F may give me more time to focus on things like research to distinguish myself from the rest of the crowd. On the other hand, standard grading may give residency programs a bit more to look at and may be beneficial for me in that sense.

Temple has one of the best clinical reputations in the country. Does anyone have any input on Maryland? Is it hard to get patients?

I have plenty of friends at Temple, but don't know many people at Maryland. Pretty much any input on the school would be great. I loved my day there, the facilities seemed much better than Temple's, and Baltimore seemed like a lovely city. I'm from Philly, so I know how rough it can get, so that's not a concern for either city either.
Thank you so much in advance.

Sounds like your mind is already made up for Temple, and you're trying to see if anyone can convince you otherwise

Not a fan of the city in general. It just doesn't attract me

My family was assaulted for a cell phone and ended in the ER mid august in broad day light. Granted they were 5miles from the school, but it's still a piece of **** city that isn't getting any better.

🙁

Sorry to hear that happened to them, but thank you for sharing. Very helpful to know this.

Actually, that's not accurate. In any case Philadelphia is not far behind, so that shouldn't even be a deciding factor used to choose between the two schools.

Actually you're right I mis-remembered, Baltimore is 7th most dangerous: http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2016/10/01/most-dangerous-cities-america/91227778/

However, the websites you linked don't have a source, and I'm more inclined to trust data cited by the FBI itself.

As for Philly vs Baltimore, I can't say since I haven't spent enough time in both. But I tend to hear a lot more bad things about Baltimore than Philly fwiw

Anecdotal data =/= fact

I'm sure those unverified sources got the data from the same FBI database. But, the point is that if you go to any school in a major US city, crime will always be an issue. That shouldn't be the deciding factor because there are ways to alieviate that (being smart, getting police escorts late at night, walking in groups, knowing which areas to avoid, etc). Focus on what makes each school unique, and pick one that you feel is a better fit (if costs are relatively similar)

Never said my anecdotal data was fact. FWIW means "for what it's worth," just as an FYI.

You can't be "sure" where those statistics came from unless cited, which they weren't. Just saying.

Don't necessarily disagree with you on the last point, but I'm going to attend a school that is both:

1. Relatively cheap/gives me the most value for my money

And

2. Will be within an environment where I'm comfortable. If I'm going to spend 4 years studying long hours, I'm going to want to be in an environment that is conducive to that.

Not really trying to start a giant debate but here's some rebuttals.

You said you "tend to hear a lot of bad things" about Baltimore. People hear bad things about a lot of places, so just because yours was limited to Baltimore and not Philly doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. That's what I wanted to clear up. Just saying.

Seeing as how the Bureau is one of the only places that put out such census data, it is only logical to assume that all these sites (which all have very similar data to the official FBI report I might add) are getting their info from. I might be wrong, but I'll take my chances.

1. Agreed

2. Also agreed. But you have to go to each location in person and get a feel for it yourself before you just start judging while using crime data as your citation.

Let me guess, you are from Baltimore. :penguin:

I'm from the DMV area, been to Baltimore a good number of times in my life time. Not a fan.

Different strokes I guess.

Yeah I can understand that, it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea but it's nowhere close to the worst place to be either.

Let's just agree to disagree 😉

I've been told from friends at MD that it's a bit cutthroat, and from friends at temple that it is very chill there.

My brother goes to med school at JHU, has the same sentiments about Baltimore. I've never been to Philly but I do know the facilities at MD are quite nice, and the school is in a better spot than where Johns Hopkins is.

JHU med school is in a bad part of town too. Just earlier this month, about 5 minutes from the school an old man was stabbed to death. I own property about 30 seconds from where that happened, so i'm sure you can bet how excited I was
