You are stellar. Get @Goro's rock star list and add HBCUs; you're in excellent shape. If you wanted to add diamonds to a golden application, you could get more clinical volunteering. Also be sure to shadow a primary care doctor.

Thank you! I will definitely be putting the focus on getting as much clinical experience and shadowing as possible in before May, and into my gap year as needed.

Hi all, I have been trying to draft a school list and want to make sure it is balanced for my stats. Some of my ECs (clinical vol. & shadowing) are newly in progress so numbers are a bit low now and I've indicated where I expect them to be by the spring. Any help is appreciated!

  1. cGPA and sGPA as calculated by AMCAS or AACOMAS: 4.0 for both
  2. MCAT score(s) and breakdown: 516 (128/130/127/131)
  3. State of residence or country of citizenship (if non-US): WA
  4. Ethnicity and/or race: Black female
  5. Undergraduate institution or category: Public university
  6. Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer): estimated 150 hrs as patient escort at hospital; 16 hrs at monthly free clinic run by local religious org (will try to do more, so far too small to mention?)
  7. Research experience and productivity: estimated 500 hours as a research assistant in social psych lab, no pub, slim chance poster
  8. Shadowing experience and specialties represented: estimated 20 hours with cardiologist & anticipating 30 hours through rural healthcare program this spring break
  9. Non-clinical volunteering: 170 hrs as a level 5 crisis counselor at CTL, 130 hours as a mentor/tutor in an after school program with a nonprofit for underprivileged kids
  10. Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc): 530 hrs as a math tutor at CC academic success center, 55 hrs as Biochem TA, 20 hrs over a spring break at an immigration law firm (too small / unimportant to mention?); estimated 300 hrs as founding member/secretary of a mentorship/outreach program for high schoolers of color interested in health professions; secretary and VP of CC Pre-health club for one year
  11. Relevant honors or awards: I write fiction as a hobby and was nominated for an award for fiction by an English department faculty member
  12. Anything else not listed you think might be important: I did two years (all prereqs except biochem and physics) at CC. I’m a psych major (BA) in my senior year
Currently my list is quite long and is very top heavy:
Far reach: Harvard, Columbia, NYU, Cornell, Kaiser, Uchicago, Mayo AZ, Yale, Stanford
High target: Baylor, UTSW, UCSF, UCLA, UCSD, Case Western, OSU, UMich
Target: UWash, Miami, USC, Emory, McGovern, Dell, UMaryland, Einstein
Low target: WSU, Georgetown, UMinnesota, Rush, UArizona (Phoenix), Howard

I'd appreciate help with cutting schools, and adding more targets. Thanks again!
Delete the TX schools (except Baylor and UTSW), U MN, Gtown, U AZ, Rush,

ADD HBCs, and all NYC Titans.
Any school is yours. Aim high.

quick side note: what are the NYC titans?

These are about my stats (lower GPA, higher MCAT) and i’m also a black female. You can see how my cycles going in my sig.. go big. You’re gonna do great. Also really hone your personal statement, I’m also a writer and people have talked about my writing in every interview I’ve had so far. I would also add Wash U and Vandy to the list, I loved them.

Good luck, PM me if you have any questions, I would be happy to send over my school list.

@mass-premed66 thank you for sharing your experience! I will start planning and drafting a PS. Can I ask how you included your writing in your application? It’s something I’m really passionate about and I’d love to show that

Yeah. For your school list: state schools, HBCUs, and fill out the rest of the list with top 20s. Add any midtiers that especially interest you. Good luck.
