I have been having major panic attacks whenever I even think about my interviews, so my doc prescribed some Xanax XR (extended release) meds for me to take as needed. Supposedly, the effect lasts for about 24 hrs and should help me calm down significantly. Being the weirdo that I am, I haven't tried them yet cuz I'm scared. Have any of you guys taken Xanax, how does it make you feel, and what would be the recommendation for me taking them on interview day?

Well definitely try them before your interview so you know if you're gonna have any weird side-effects.

My mom takes them - they make her really really out of it and sleepy - I wouldn't take them before an interview but I guess the effects may be different for everyone.

Well, that's hard to say. Everybody's physiology is different enough that you'd have to try it out first before you'd really know. I'd recommend running a few test interviews/senarios on Xanax with someone who can be fairly objective with you and looking at your results through direct feedback and observation.

I take a very low dosage of Xanax every once in a while, but it isn't extended release. For me, it relaxes me and puts me to sleep. For some people, it makes them goofy.

No matter what you do, try it out at least TWICE before you even think about taking it before interviews. The last thing you want is to show up stoned on interview day.

Well crap, there goes my plan.

If you find its too strong for you you might want to try bach flower rescue remedy, you can find it at health food stores. Its a bit milder so you might not be "stoned" for your interview. Again I would try it out first tho, just like any med.

Actually, a low dose beta blocker might be a better choice. It will eliminate the catecholamine surge (palpitations, sweaty palms, tightness in the throat, and subjective shortness of breath you can get when very anxious) while not affecting your cerebral function to any great degree, thus preserving mental clarity. Anxiolytics such as Xanax will slow down your mental acuity, and dosing can be tricky. Try to avoid them, unless you don't care about appearing to be "under the influence".

I got some Xanax for a trip to Hawaii this past May. Airplanes make me really nervous and I usually end up with a terrible stomach ache. It worked really well for me, I felt much calmer and relaxed, and only mildly sleepy. I was considering using it for interviews as well. Just as everyone else has been saying I would test it out ahead of time under similar conditions to interview day (ie time of day, amount, with food/without food, etc) just to be safe. Its going to affect everyone differently. Good luck, and I feel your pain.

I can't speak about xanax, but I have taken ativan for acute anxiety in the past. Basically it puts me to sleep and makes my muscles feel like jell-o, probably not the best thing to have happen while going into an interview.

Another poster recommended a low dose beta blocker, which I would have to stand by. I have some propranolol that I was rx'd for heart palpitations that works wonders for nervous situations and doesn't make you all sleepy and jell-o like. It tends to decrease sweaty palms, fidgeting, etc... I didn't take it for my interview and did just fine, but I have met others who have.

Also, don't forget deep diaphragmatic breathing!

I second propranolol.

I agree with the Beta Blocker-it's great for anxiety like that...I know lots of people who take it before they give big presentations etc...plus...having seen so many of my patients addicted to Xanax...it is one hard benzo to stop....I wouldn't want to mess with it

Before presentations I pop 2 hydros... Makes you the most relaxed smoothest person you have ever been, without impairing mental capacity.

...And when patients stop taking Xanax, the w/d symptoms are horrible.
