So, now that the OTC panel has recommended Xenical for OTC distribution, how many of you think the FDA will approve this?

Xenical seems quite dangerous to me for little kids. Can you imagine your 12 year old daughters on this drug? They could depend on it to become obsessivly thin!

I wonder what kind of studies were done on kids.

I hope one of the three who were against the decision writes the famed and never asked for "Minority Report"

If this post doesn't make any sense to you, look up the controversy with the drug Plan B

They need to place a recommendation to eat an entire bag of "fat free" chips with a fat substitute to approximate the side effects you will get from this drug. I doubt the FDA will recommend it for OTC.

Personally, I'd rather be fat than wear Depends to soak up my oily discharge.

 Are those chips nasty, or what?

Not sure wether or not the FDA will OK this for OTC use. What I do think this country is overdue for is a creation of a new class of drugs. Drugs that are OTC but only available through the consent of a pharmacist (I believe there is a class like this in the UK). It sounds simple but can be a very complicated issue. I believe the pharmacist would have to formally monitor the patient in some way and there would have to be a system in place to ensure the patient is not abusing the medication (ex they get more medication at another pharmacy 5 days later). I would imagine that creating such a class of meds would create a liability to the pharmacist. If I had time I would be interested in knowing more about the UK system. The pharmacist only access would ensure counseling on proper usage as well as the lifestyle modifications that are needed.

Clarinex isnt selling very good as prescirption drug, maybe that should go OTC too. But sersiouly, xenical is never used where i work. Ive dispensed it twice in 3 years. It doesnt help that its not overly effective and insurance companies will not cover it and its got some nifty AE. I could only imagine what people slamming down 10 a day will expierence in their quest for thinness. Also, i imagine we would see an increase in deffiecencies in fat solble vitamins since it can interfere with their absorption

What the world needs is PPA combined with xenical in an easy to swallow combo capsule

Hahahaha! I've probably dispensed it more than that, but not too many times on refill. People try it for 2 months or so & find it doesn't work very well & the side effects are awful so they go back to Jenny Craig or whatever....Insurance, IMO, is the same reason Clarinex is not moving-there is no compelling reason to have them authorize Clarinex when loratidine is OTC. Just wait until Allegra or Zyrtec go OTC - the whole class will be not covered by insurance, which will for remaining members of the class to be OTC. I think that is more likely to happen than Xenical. btw....I remember when diphenhydramine was Rx only - it was awful if you had a case of poison oak - required a Dr visit!

A funny coinsidense tonight. A lady called asking me about it and what i thought of it since its OTC now. I first explained it isnt yet and that it is not very effective and has some icky AE and is expensive. She said something allow the lines of, "figures it doesnt work" and thanked me for being honest. AT least its not being potrayed by the media as a wonder drug

I actually liked the WOW brand chips. It just helped you realize that you should eat them in moderation, since the result of eating an entire bag stays in memory for awhile.

I'd hope that those taking Xenical would reduce the fatty foods in their diets, so that way they wouldn't get the runs, but knowing people, I can only see a lot of news reports about those affected by oily discharges.

Olestra.. *shudders* Ew.
