OK, how horrible is it to have X's on your application. I failed to list my credit no credit classes as pass/fail (I know my fault) but that makes at least 6 X's, not to mention that I am battling with AMCAS over my freshman and sophomore status (their calculations are incorrect but they are very slow to change anything) and if that doesn't get correct that is about 10 more X's.

I am afraid these make me look careless (the pass/fail ones were definitely my fault) and I am wondering if med schools take this into consideration at all?

Thanks!

Don't worry about it. AMCAS mis-classified several of my courses, and after they fixed them, I had about 25 X's on there. It's more for your reference than anything else.

At a certain point, with so many X's and corrections the reviewer may even reject the AMCAS and have you resubmit it with corrections you make, in which case adcoms may not even see those X's. To tell you the truth, I wonder if adcoms even see those X's to begin with, and if they do, I can't imagine them holding it against you because so many schools are out there that misclassify things and calculate their GPAs differently so they need to standardize it with corrections of their own.

My advisor said that they do see them and told me to minimize the X's as much as possible which has made me super paranoid. Ugh. Hopefully they'll just chalk it up as simple mistake - no big deal.

I think your advisor is nuts. X's are such a minor concern on the application, your advisor shouldn't even be worrying about it. If the application cleared AMCAS, you're fine. Let it go and get ready for secondaries.

Yes, after you are verified click on "print application." A PDF will pop up and you can scroll through it and see all the corrections they made.

/ = everything is ok
X = they corrected something (grade, classification, class status, etc) which you can agree with or then send in a correctin for
o = in progress class

Having been down the road of submitting an Academic Change Request, I can assure you, even if they fix it the way it's supposed to be (or, in my case, the way it was when I submitted), the X remains. Stop worrying about it.

I got verified this morning. I had a tons of X's because I listed the year I took the class according to the actual year instead of total credit hours.

I don't think they will care.

You do want to minimize them but don't sweat it. The main point is that getting an X because you incorrectly indicated the name of the course is fine, but getting an X because you put down an A when you really got a B isn't. So just make sure it doesn't look like you are trying to misrepresent yourself/ pulling a fast one.

Not true for me. After I submitted an Academic Change Request and AMCAS agreed to revert back to what I had originally submitted (and the way it's supposed to be), they replaced the X with a /.

Yeah, I have a ton of Xs because I called them before submitting and asked how to classify my classes (i.e., according to credits or semester/year). They told me to go by their credit guidelines. So, I did that. When they verified me, they changed them all one semester different than I had them (I took one semester of college credit classes before I started at my official undergrad college, which AMCAS oddly designated during verification as high school status), ignoring the "credit limits" for years that they set forth in their application instructions. I thought the Xs wouldn't matter, but now perhaps I'll call and see what they think. I only have those Xs because I took the advice of the woman at AMCAS that I talked to before filling it out!

My application is full of X's. I didn't know how to classify my years of schooling (fresh., soph., etc.). I took years off from school and it took me five years to obtain my degree. If the X's are held against me, I will be stunned.

I've been reading AMCAS applications for 7 cycles (at least). I never knew, never cared what the / and X stood for. No one thought it was important enough to tell me. It seems that at one school, it doesn't matter. I suspect that my school isn't the only one that doesn't care.

No worries.

I got 6 x's for not putting IP as the grade for classes i was currently taking. I just marked current/future in the special course type box but apparently you were supposed to write IP weird.

also I have a O with an X in it...anyone know what that means?

wait, for the class year stuff that you guys got x's for, does ap's count in that i.e. could having a lot of ap's boost you into being a soph as a fresh, jr as a soph, etc when you just went to a regular 4-year institution and marked everything by the number year you were in school?

this happened to me too i became a rank 2 after my first quarter in college so on my transcript it says rank 2 so i indicated that i was a sophmore on the amcas but the year is still my freshmen year. I hope that makes sense.

when i got verified though it sucks cause it looks like i did bad in my gpa calculation for my sophmore year when really that was my freshmen year that i did bad and i did good in all years after that. Its messed up but this is the right way to do it.

Ok, I am no longer worrying about it. Thanks everyone! 😛

Thanks for weighing in, LizzyM. I'll take your word on it. It seems it would be a very silly thing to hold against an applicant.

I listed about 35-40 classes on AMCAS and every single one had X's because I put the number grades (4.0, 3.7, 3.3 etc.) when I was supposed to put A, A-, B+. Oh well. No one cared, but when I called AMCAS and asked if anyone would care, the a-hole on the other end said yeah some schools might not like it and freaked me out for a while until I asked ur exact question on SDN.

X's dont matter, it means AMCAS just changed somethin.

Hey guys!
Man, I wish I saw this thread sooner or I wouldn't have started a new one. Anyways, I just realized that the reason I got 3 Xs is because I classified the 3 summer courses I took summer of my 2nd year as my "SO" status instead of "JR." OOPPPS, So what's the agreement? Does this matter or no worries? 🙂
Thanks!

I do not think "x"s will have impact on your application once AMCAS processes it. I had "x" on about a half of my courses because I transferred from a foreign university to a U.S. college during my undergraduate study. I was a bit frustrated about it at first and called schools to ask about it. Gernerally, schools told me that they would ask you to send official transcript if they found a problem with finalized AMCAS. However, no school asked me additional transcript! Good luck!

Thanks a lot day. That makes me feel better. I just called AMCAS and they said it's not a problem if it was a mistake with the term or class standing, but that it's only a problem if you got an "F" and you "accidentally" put that you got an "A." Makes sense 🙂
