Howdy.

So, naturally, along with worrying myself sick over acceptances/ rejections, I'm fretting about financing a masters.:scared: Has anyone heard from Yale about Fin Aid for MPH? Or, does anyone know how it usually plays out?

Thanks!

This info applies to MPH only: most folks who receive significant aid will be given a merit scholarship (typically covering the full cost of tuition--I know of at least 3 people with full tuition covered). These are sometimes handed out with acceptances, sometimes a month later (generally, you'll know by March at the latest). Most others are on government loans.

I just did my FAFSA today and discovered my EFC is about 14000. What does this mean? It looks like I only qualify for loans. :-(

Thanks stories! That's good to know. Slightly disheartening, but good to know. 🙂Do you know if MPHers are ever offered TA or research assistant positions?

knitPHgurl, sorry to hear that. Is that based solely on your financial circumstances or were your parents taken into consideration in the calculation? I know Yale doesn't ask for parent numbers, but man, 14 grand seems like quite a lot.

I filed as an independent, so there was no parent info. I do work full-time, but it's not like I have a high-paying job! Oh well. Maybe I can get work study or be a TA.

TA: No. It's not "offered", you have to earn it by applying like you would a job, more or less. You can only TA a class you've taken before. So you won't be TAing your first year. PhD students are required to TA, so PhD students sign-up to TA first and then MPH students can sign up for classes that might have openings. TAing is also a job, only. MPH students get paid for it (it has no bearing on tuition alleviation or anything like that).

RA: No. Some students work with faculty on research, but purely as a side job thing/class credit. Nothing that gets you tuition assistance.

Also, you'll find MPH students are rarely given preference for TA or RA jobs no matter where they go simply because they don't have the expertise right out of the gate to be capable of doing any of those jobs. You might be more qualified in your 2nd year, though. This was also the case at BU when I was a student there (I applied to a RA position there after my 1st semester, but it's not easy to come by because not all faculty members have funding to hire a RA). And generally, TA and RA availability is offered to PhD students first before they are offered to MPH students.

I'm a first year at Yale and there are a few different ways you can offset the cost of school or generate extra spending money for yourself. There are definitely a good amount of MPH second years with TA positions. It varies a bit by course but nearly all of our biostats TA's have been 2nd year MPHers, probably due to the small size of the BIS department here. Several students have also found jobs via various sources from the University and in research departments other than those at the School of Public Health. I stayed on part time with my former employer as have several other students. You have options, so don't get too discouraged.

Holy Cow.

If I got that e-mail I would be beside myself and my choice would be made. There wouldn't even be a question.

I wonder what factors into this? I wonder if I'm competitive for this sort of thing...I wonder if HPM would do such a thing.

Just another thing to think and drool about. wowzers.

P.S.: What were you stats? If you don't mind sharing.

Thanks-- you folks are all so supportive! I'm still in (euphoric) shock.

I've heard adcoms sometimes search forums like these, so I'm waiting to hear from all of my schools before I post my stats... again (which means you can find them if you search hard enough, haha) or scholarship specifics. Not sure if it'd do any damage, but why take the chance, eah? I'll gladly shoot you a PM though. 🙂

That's fantastic. Congratulations! You're the first I've heard of being offered a stipend, that's phenomenal!

Congrats Mr. WERD. That is truly awesome. 😀

Just got my financial aid notice.

9K - Grants
3.5K - Work Study
The rest K- Loans

Its no full ride (congrats again WERD), but I suppose it could be worse.

I am filling out my Yale FA application. I know I am a little bit late but hopefully they still accept my application because my email for some reason filtered my financial aid application.

Anyway, do we have to send our 2009 tax returns with it? Mine is not even ready. I thought taxes are not due until 4/15. Can I send 2008 instead. Argh its such a chore to do my taxes now.

Just wondering what everyone else did... No other program asked me for 2009 tax return.. just estimates

I got 8k grants and 3.5k work study with the rest in loans.

I suppose it could be worse as well.

Didn't you need to do the 2009 taxes before filling out the FAFSA?

I only got 5.5k grants, 3.5k work study and the rest loans.

From what I'm seeing on this forum, this award is definitely on the low side. I'm not sure why since I'm pretty poor (ha!) and my scores were on the good side (though not excellent). I don't have much experience so maybe that's why?

Any amount of grant is good 🙂 You'd be surprised to hear the number of folks who get nothing.

hey Stories, thank you for providing us with so much useful info!

a question for you: does financial aid for MS students work differently? Like, do they get more/less money, etc?

It's a completely different governing system since MS (and PhD students) are not SPH students, but rather they are GSAS students. Usually, MS and PhD students are funded under training grants or a professor's grant (whoever you end up working with for your project). This information should come with your acceptance material.

Hey stories, how does that exactly work? I just recieved my letter and other than the "congratulations!" it says "as a general rule we cannot offer any financial assistance to students enrolled in the Master's degree program." Am I supposed to ask professors individually for funding/training? Right now I'm really leaning towards Yale, but if I'm gonna have to pay the full price, it makes my decision harder. Thanks again

Well, that's your answer. Funding info for those of us in the MS/PhD are given out with the acceptance material. You may wish to contact whoever would be your potential adviser/PI if there is a grant you be put on.

should i give up hope if i haven't heard from the MPH program at this point?

werd814: Wow, that's awsome, full tuition and and stipend.
hehe, I'm jealous, I wasn't offered any grants.
3,500 in work study
and the rest in loans.

I e-mailed the financial aid office asking about the status of my aid application, and they sent my packet the next day. To those who hadn't received it, maybe you can contact them.

Congrats everyone!

sooo is anyone else in this boat? I've applied for financial aid at all the schools I've applied to, and heard back from all of them. However, with Yale, I apparently needed to send in my 2009 taxes (which at the moment I haven't done yet - I have 2 more weeks!) before they even look at your documents! I didn't find this to be the case at any other school, and I just talked to the fin aid director - grant money is gone. eek!!! any advice? I'm obviously sending the info in ASAP..but should i plead for grant money? haha help?

I noticed on the YSPH's website under financial aid/scholarships that there was a long list of scholarships and grants (http://publichealth.yale.edu/finaid/mph/grants/index.aspx) that were possibly available to new admits. The page does say that offers of scholarships are made in the Fall, so probably aren't included in the original financial aid package/offer new admits are sent.

I was wondering though, how common is it for new MPH admits to receive these scholarships? Seems like there's a ton of awards there, so seems like the potential for scholarship support is fairly high? Or am I off the mark here?
