I am 28 years old, and currently practicing Family Medicine and
Emergency Medicine in a small Northwest Wisconsin town of 3,000, which is a member of the Mayo Health System. I was an EMT and a CPR instructor throughout my undergraduate years and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with a Bachelor of Science degree
in Biology in 1997. My cumulative GPA was 3.5, with a science GPA of nearly 3.7. I took the GRE and MCAT in 1996, and my
scores were satisfactory (composite MCAT of 23).
I then was accepted to Yale University School of Medicine-Physician
Associate Program in New Haven, CT, where I graduated with a Master of
Medical Science degree in 1999. I have been a PA for almost 2 years now, and
though I have a wonderful job and work with incredible people, my interests
have matured and now largely revolve around psychiatry, in particular mood
disorders and their comorbidity with other psychiatric illnesses.
I would like to pursue my career goal of becoming a psychiatrist, and
the osteopathic model is most appealing to me.
Does anyone have some general words of advice for me? Do you think I would be competitive? I'm specifically looking at LECOM, PCOM, and OSUCOM because they aren't asking me to update my MCAT scores.
