Yale pre-interview reception: mandatory??

Hi all,
for those who have already interviewed at Yale, was the pre-interview reception on Friday night casual or it felt like a pre-screen? I have a conflict that I must miss one reception, either at Yale or another comparable program. I want to find out which one I can most safely skip.

Didn't feel like a pre-screen. Everyone was very nice though.
