Right now i am spending a month in Ecuador, and while at a party i met a few med students here in the university in Guayaquil. One of them, already done with his studies, did the USMLE and got a residency in Yale. The other one, was moving to the states to study for the USMLE and then apply to some hospitals, hes hoping for Mayo. Whats the use of slaving away for a shot to be awarded a spot in the coming year, not to mention the 160k or so debt, if it was this easy to secure a residency (which is what really matters) for a fraction of the cost and effort? To get into the medschool that the Yale resident graduated from, is as easy as signing that tuition check over and signing your name in the class forms.

...Because it's not that easy - the people you talked to rock. Look at numbers for Step I or residency matches. Going to a US medical school all but guarantees you a pass and a match somewhere. The very best IMG's can still pass and match, but huge numbers of their classmates do not.

first of all, are you a girl? if so, then they tried to hit it.

this never even occurred to me when i first read the OP, but now that you say it, that's brilliant. and probably right.

Maybe they had too much booze and ^thought you were cute. They would say anything. You gotta be skeptical about these things, especially at a party.

Did you look up the stats on yale yet? I need to see some numbers before I could believe them.

That might be where my ex-roommate's going to medical school.

Anyway, yeah it's cheaper to go to medical school in Ecuador, and much easier to get it, but it's really, really hard to get into the US as an IMG. The people you talked to were probably at the tops of their classes.

First off, what in the world stupid assumption is that? Are you a girl? My name is william henry bright = whb. Secondly, this is 100% verified, and not some gay doctor trying to hit on me. Being at the top of the class in this school wouldnt be that hard to begin with, and im pretty sure you can finish med school here in under 10k. Whats so enticing about this, is that the human body here or in China is the same, therefore studying to be a decent doctor anywhere would lead you to pass the USMLE or any sort of medical exam anywhere. So why go through the hassle of spending 150k, possibly a year more to make yourself a better applicant for the next application cycle, if you could just do it somewhere else for cheaper and easier?

P.S- to all those who joked and laughed about using med school as a pick up line, you guys are clearly ***** repelants.

I'm not very clear on this, but isn't the USMLE a MEDICAL test and not a science test. If that's the case then you don't have the same chance of passing by going anywhere. You go to a better school to get better clinical skills, not memorize anatomy. Better schools TEND to have better doctors teaching, meaning they TEND to produce better doctors (again I used the word "tend" for a reason). Think of it this way. If you had a choice between a recent graduate who went to JH or Harvard or a doctor who studied in the Carrib. which one would you pick for your sick child/mother/etc. That's basically how residency programs think of it. After all, in residency, you ARE dealing with people's lives.

P.S
Posting name on forum=bad idea.

I would rather pay $150k to go to a school in the US than pay $10k to go to a school other than in the US.

IMO, there is no place like the United States. I am not going to go to South America and get killed by drug cartels.

I think my own family would rather pay $150k out of their OWN pocket than pay $10K to go to south america because they know i'm safe in the US.

I agree that it's cheaper.

I don't agree that it would be a piece of cake to be at the top of the class. I'm not sure how it is in Ecuador (ask me again in 4 years when my bff graduates), but I know that in a lot of countries, it's easy to get in, but then a lot of people fail out over time because it's actually still hard.

If you're willing to take your chances with the fact that it'll look somewhat questionable that you did med school abroad instead of the US, then yeah, it's a good deal to go abroad. But the main reason my bff is doing it is because she's actually from Ecuador and wanted to be closer to her family.

This is a pretty ignorant post.
Try stepping out of your comfort zone some time, it's good for you.
