Does anyone know if it is possible to take a year off during residency? And also how to go about doing this. I am about to start PGY 1 year (in FM) and am wondering if I could take a full year out, after intern year, to work overseas in Europe. (I have been guaranteed more than one job there starting next July and am fully qualified to work there.)

I have personal reasons for wanting to do this and am not in any real rush to finish residency.

thanks!

Couldn't you just email your program director and ask?

No one can really answer your question since you posted this in the international forum and didn't specify which country you doing the residency in.

curious about this too. thinking about taking a year or 2 off to train for the olympics.

Assuming you're asking about US residencies, this is not easy to do because of the way residency is funded. If you leave my program, I will try to find someone to fill your spot. 1 or 2 years later when you want to come back, your spot will be gone. Someone in their PGY-1 would need to drop out to open up a spot for you. If a program was very committed to bringing you back, and if the field involved had prelim years (IM and GS), then the program could take one extra prelim and one less categorical resident the year prior, and then would have a spot for you.
