my gf is now in medical school and they're having social functions all this week. i attended one of the functions with her last night and had fun most of the time except for one incident...

one of the second year medical student, that i knew from undergrad, was sitting with us. a first year medical student comes up and he introduces himself as a second year med student and my girlfriend as a first year student. and me as "just a dental student" with a hand motion that suggests that I am not worth talking too [like a wave and looks away at the same time, hard to describe but the meaning is certain].

he starts talking to my girlfriend about medical school and says how easy it was for him etc etc. i'm talking to the other med student about other stuff.

in the middle of the conversation he says with the most condescending tone ever... " do you like working in people's mouths all day?" --- it was almost said under his breath. the other two people at the table ignores his statement and i said, "it's fine, i like it."

i just wanted to rant about this, and i hope his teeth rot out of his head.

i wonder if his ego only feels threatened by dentist/dental students or he has to try to prove himself to everybody... what do you guys think?

Just do what the other people did and ignore him.

my answer would be: " well, you can ask me that question when your mom is in my chair crying in tooth pain and I might probably think over it" 😀

I would have said enjoy your proctology rotation.
I spent a whole month on colon & rectal surgery. That is by far the nastiest hole in the body...and I've seen 'em all.

I've seen this before. This is interesting coming from a med student, who's sole job in life is to find xrays and food for his residents.

You tell these people under your breath " so how do you like dealing with insurance while all I do is accept cash"

For the first time ever in history the avg salary of a GP beats many physicians. I know its not about money, but its a good come back 🙂

And the hours are better.

So, do you like working in mouths all day? That IS what you are planning on doing, right? Sounds more like a jealousy issue to me.

And I am VERY glad I will never have to do a proctology rotation ... ever. Or a single prostate exam for that matter. 😱

I was thinking along the same lines. Perhaps you can respond and say... "do you like looking at people's ass? Or are you just having small penile envy, hence going around denigrating people? Maybe you can ask him, "do you like staying late all night and doing rotations so that you feel you are special?"
Or you can ask him, "Do you like to go to school for all those years to have some health insurance representative tell you what procedure you can do and not?"

Anyway, now back to being serious, what even motivation that drives him to his personality is unimportant. What is important is how we feel about ourselves, or how we cause us to feel about ourselves. There will always be people to who will look down at dentist, and those always looking up to us for guidance. Ultimately, we live with our lives 24/7 day in day out.

Furthermore, not only that, what if one day one of your patients express similar sentiments? Will you be offended when it happens?

You should have punched him out 😀

if he likes looking up people's butts and checking for hernias all day, but considering I was in a restaurant full of 1st and 2nd year medical students, i didn't think that was my place.

i wonder if he's the same way towards pharmacists and podiatrists.

Just wandered by through the "new post" function. A lot of medical students are socially inept. Maybe it was his idea of humor, although since you didn't take it that way, it was a poor attempt. I'm sorry you caught this kind of crap. Hopefully guys like him will make me look good as I go interview and hope to get into medical schools.

How come I didn't have dental students finding me xrays and food when I was a resident?

Oh that's right, doggie & the other dental students were smarter than that when they came to my residency. They quickly realized what a waste of time it is to stand around and watch dental residents all day & bring them lunch & xrays....

To to OP: Don't worry, the second year med student will get over it real quickly when he reaches 4th year and has a bad toothache and comes to your clinic. I'd bet he has "no dental insurance" and will chose to ignore his teeth until a real problem arises.

Somebody in another thread suggested that Med Student Insecurity Syndrome be included whenever the DSM-V comes out. I'm inclined to agree.

🙄
I actually felt bad about not going. But playing hooky was just too tempting!

A lot of med students are like that. Just take a peak into the pre-med forum and look at some of the posts. They definitely give arrogance a new meaning

Good one, and lest we forget the OBGYN rotation. Dont let them get to you dude, my bro is in his residency now and it's a real nightmare. Sleeping at the hospital, insane amount of hours, and of course looking ahead to becoming owned by HMO's and insurance. To each his own.

Next time tell him, I love looking at people's mouth every day, since I see in that hole my car and house payments, my trophy wives and buying expensive Lingerie for your wife while you are not around during your residency and on call times.

I think the dude was trying to hit on your girl by bring you down. Don't let anybody to mess with your mind.
