Hi everyone,

So...for my three letters, I am planning on getting two ophtho letters and one non-ophtho. I think (and hope) my ophtho recs will be great. Out of all my core rotation attendings, by far, my psych attending could write me the most glowing recommendation.

I tried to get to know my medicine and surgery attendings, but honestly I feel that a letter from them would be rather generic. Also, I already completed my medicine Sub-I and the attendings switched services in the middle - I only was on any of their services for two weeks, and unfortunately didn't get to know either too well. Plus - I finished all my core rotations and Sub-I a year ago (I've been on a research year since).

My grade in Psych was HP, and I honored my medicine sub-I. That being said, my psych attending and I got along REALLY well and I think he could really speak to some of my personal qualities. But I would be surprised if any of my medicine attendings or surgery attendings remembered my time on their service well enough to write an impressive, stand-out letter.

Is it frowned upon to get your non-ophtho LOR from a psych attending, without letters from any other core rotation attendings?

Sorry if this was long winded. thanks 🙂

ps: is the fourth late letter option no longer available?

correct, there is no 4th letter anymore. from what i was told when i went through this last year was go with the letter that is the best. i used an Ob-gyn letter instead of the usual med/surg ones for that reason as well. hope that helps.

I'm new to the process. I am an IMG.
Is it 3 letters maximum?
If it is, what about submitting 3 excellent ophtho letters?
