Taken this morning...

AA - 22
TS - 22
PA - 18
QR - 19
RC - 22
Bio - 30
GC - 21
OC - 18 😡

Here is my breakdown.

PAT - Same as everybody said. Much harder than Topscore. Never quite got around to using the ACEtheDAT.com version. Cubes harder. Holepunch easy. Apetures harder. Projections - same. Angles - same. Paperfold, easy, but I ran out of time because I had to rework 2 cube problems that I was messed up on. Scored 20, 23, 20 on Topscore.

QR - Same as everyone says. I only used Topscore and the GRE math study guide. I made notecards with formulas and memorized them. Socred 18, 18, 18 on TS.

Reading. Not like Topscore. I had three off the wall long and hard science articles complete with reading comprehension (the author implies...., the best finish for this article would be..., etc.). TS scores 29, 23, 25. This is more like the RC from the CD test from the Kaplan book (expect that the Kaplan interface sucks).

Bio - I thought this section was extremely hard and very picky in one's knowledge of bio. I studied this subject the most this summer. I took summer school for the physiology (plant and animal) first session, and had an advanced genetics class second session. I didn't study from Kaplan much at all. I used the Campbell textbook and read that thing multiple times over the course of the summer. Having my physio class earlier helped greatly because I didn't have to study at all for plants. I had about 3000 vocabulary flashcards that I built from my bio classes over the past year and I also bought the AP BIO (REA) at Podil's advice. This book had six practice exams that were great practice. Revisit the basics of cell bio. Ecology and evolution had a good presence (i.e. Hardy Weinberg, speciation, etc.). Genetics was piece of cake if you can do basic crosses and recognize patterns (i.e. 9:3:3:1 or 1:1:1:1). If you are still a year away from the DAT, my advice is to study like mad in your bio classes because it was the one thing that allowed me to nail this section. My physio teacher made us learn all the phyla (i.e. protostomes, coelomates, etc.) and this knowledge was nice to have. Really basic muscles, endocrine, nervous system, reproduction, and other vertebrate physio. TS = 18, 18, 20.

GC. I reviewed my whole chemistry book because it had been awhile. That didn't help much and I was confused so I bought Examkrackers for the MCAT (1001 Questions). This was a nice warm up. The Kaplan book has a great GC section and I used this the past three weeks as the primary source of my studying. The solubilities chapter is important to know. See other peoples posts for this one. TS = 19, 16, 19.

OC. I am still bewildered. I can do synthesis with 20 steps, I scored 98 and 99 in OC 1 and 2 at UTexas, but could not get the hang of what this section wanted. All I can say is know first semester extremely well and aromatics, because I saw some hard questions. For those of you that don't have exposure to fischer projections, work on these. TS = 17, 18, 19.

Overall, my story is such. Two bio classes this summer (key to the bio section). I studied for about 2.5 months including summer school. I just finshed OC this spring so I am surprised at my score, but I am not going to complain overall. I began looking at PAT stuff two years ago and was familiar with the sections, but my only exposure in the past two months was taking Topscore.

I saw a posting earlier this week that had great advice. Keep your nose in a book and stop reading these posts unless you have specific questions on Topscore. My other advice is to not take it during Olympic week.

Good luck.

you lucky bastardo

Welcome to any three texas schools.

I almost wanted to throw up on your bio score.

Way to go with those scores! And Bio...WOW! You slaughtered that section. Good job.

it's the first time i've ever seen a 30.....good job!

That's weird. I got a 28 on Bio, and it said it was the 100%. I wonder how you got a 30 and I got a 28. Anyways, congrats on a great score. You can now pick where you want to go.

Maybe a different version of the DAT with a different distribution?

Sorry Hockeydentist, but thanks for the insight on your experience. It motivated me to bust through my whole biology book in the past week prior to the test because I felt a little lost still. Weird thing was that I felt I did the worst on bio during the test, in fact during the PAT I almost lost focus because I was so pissed at how hard I thought bio was. It just goes to show that with memorizing bio you need to just drill through it and trust your answers. I will say that I hated my physio teacher this summer because we went through 18 chapters in 5 weeks, but I may just buy the man a beer.

Dr. Taco Elf, I have been reading your posts and experiences pretty religiously and your posts and experience were a good confidence builder.
Thanks man.

Sloppy Joe, I am not sure except that perhaps with a 28 you are still in the 100th percentile. I would guess that 1 question seperated our scores, which I would sum up to luck. Good work on your score too.

regards,

bpen

Not to nit pick, but I didn't miss any question on bio. I figured it out using the SNS overall score and add up my gchem and ochem scores. I just want a 30...it looks so much better. I am just envious, and in reality I am really happy so I'll shut up now.

28, 30. Awesome. You both are 100% because you are outliers (freaks of nature if you ask me 🙂 ). Nice work. I'm with DTE...very impressed.

Bpen,
First of all, congrats on your score! I found your quote to be very comprehensive and helpful. Especially the part that says stop reading these post and get your nose in a book! I am about 9 months out from taking the test! I am kind of hurting on the studying and can only do two hours a day since I am in Iraq right now. I thought that your bio score was incredible. Did you mean the AP Bio book that can be purchased online? I am having serious problems with the angles....how did you prepare for them? Did you take a Kaplan Course and if you did was it the classroom portion or the private tutoring? Do you know anyone that invested the money in the Kaplan private tutoring? Well, thanks a lot!

Well done. I am glad my advice helped. I feel very strongly that doing lots of questions is the way to go. Not only is it practice for the real thing, but you also learn the material as you review those questions you got wrong. With respect to your 30 on the bio, that is truly amazing. But not to take anything away from that spectacular achievement, I see only luck as differentiating between scores in the 23-30 range as the score is decided by 1 or 2 questions. I achieved some high scores and I will readily acknowledge luck as being a HUGE factor. Still, a perfect score on any section, let alone what I view as the most tricky section, is very impressive.

With the OC, I suspect that you may have been weak on the stereochem questions, which are heavily emphasized. After more advanced OChem and biochem class, I forgot quite a bit of the stereochem from first semester OChem. Did you feel the examkrackers 1001 OC was inadequate in preparing for this section? Doing each question and reviewing the answers helped me tremendously to prepare for the exam.

I think I am starting to repeat myself from my lengthy post from a few weeks ago. Anyways, good job again and good luck with apps.

Podil,

I don't think it was stereochem that killed me. Going into this, we had never really emphasized fischers in class, but I learned pretty quickly after TS #1. I think that each professor has a different way of teaching organic. My teacher didn't emphasize certain reactions (some of which were new to me in the book) and hit on others. This was overcome by practice, but I saw some things on the DAT like a deactivating group (i.e. NO2) on an aromatic going to completion in a friedel crafts, whereas my class emphasized that this could not occur. I had several lab questions too that I wasn't properly reviewed for. Even though my o-chem score wasn't where I thought it should be, I am very comfortable with my skill in that class as I head into biochem this year. That is really all that matters to me given that my overall score was good enough to get me in somewhere.

I do agree that perfect in any section or even really high is luck. I feel that my GC score could have been in the mid to high 20's if a little luck would have shifted on that one too. I do think that one is more prone to being lucky if they have drilled themselves silly with practice tests (ala AP Bio-- thanks btw) and summer immersed in the subject in question than somebody who is winging it. Either way, I feel that my overall science score (22) pretty well reflected my overall abilities even though the individual scores were more polarized than I would have liked to have seen.
